[diesel_mercedes] RE: New Mercedes

Congrats ! .

That one has the M110 DOHC InLine 6 cylinder engine , correct ? .

Before anything else , go buy and install a new fuel filter , it's under neath the car near the gas tank and I guarantee it's old and clogged , causing poor performance , hard starting and low fuel economy .

Be aware this car will $uck gasoline like it's an old Buick .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] RE: Blower for a w123, anyone used the Uro brand for this?

Rob ;

The brushes are  cheap but if it turns stiffly even after cleaning and oiling the oilite bearings , it's junk ~ don't waste time and effort on it .

The W-123 blower is dead easy to change out , slide the R. seat back all the way and begin with the forward most screws that are harder to see , you'll have it done in 1/2 hour including the necessary cleanup of the plenums .

My trip to the PAP didn't a good one, as there was only 1 300D in both of the Stanton/ Anaheim lots, and it looked pretty worn out too. The line to buy stuff was 30-40 people back at the Beach Blvd lot, as it's a half off weekend.

They may be able to be rebuilt, yet for how much? Grainger has brushes, yet it's hard to tell which one to get from the online catalog.

[diesel_mercedes] RE: Blower for a w123, anyone used the Uro brand for this?

Rob ;

Unless you find a new one in a junker, $ave your Pick-A-Part $ .

Elsewhere I read folks are having good luck with the Uro blower motor so I just bought one and will install it as soon as I can work with my tools again , should be a matter of weeks now .

If you can possibly afford it , I highly suggest buying the OEM Mercedes one from The Classic Center via Tom Hansen ~ truly I would if only I could .

I do not believe the Uro one will last anther 30 years & 380,000 + miles .

Has anyone used the Uro brand for this?
I'll ask Thom at the Classic center about their prices.
AutoHausAZ has the Uro blower for $93.89, and the Mercedes part at $624

Maybe down to the PAP today.

[diesel_mercedes] RE: Stopped Again

The 1/4 tank bit makes me think it is time to remove the in tank fuel strainer , this is a really filthy , oily job that requires ramps and a 46 MM socket with 1/2" drive flex handle , wobble 12" extension or a 1/2" drive knuckle .

Once you've taken the Diesel bath and removed the screen , it is easily cleaned in a Hospital Clean container of fresh gasoline and an old tooth brush plus 5 # or so of _LINT_FREE_ clean rags or blue wiper towels .

It really sounds like it's drawing in air ~ and when the slimy crud collects around the in tank fuel screen , it forces the screen to begin drawing air from the top part of it when there's not much fuel in the tank ~ the 1/4 tank problems and stalling indicates this to me .

It matters not who you have paid to clean the in tank screen , I always find this is clogged until the owner removes and cleans it properly .

Have you tried holding both ends of each and every hose connection under the hood and twisting them ? if they're able to twist , you have an air leak , replace the hose with the correct IMPORTED 7MM DIESEL RATED fuel hose (! NOT the stuff NAPA etc. sell !)  and a full set of matching band typ hose clamps ~ those " ideal " (brand) screw typ clamps CANNOT POSSIBLY work 100 % ~ I know many here have them and all my cars did when I bought them but all have the correct $3 each German band typ clamps now and no air leaks in the fuel....

I understand you've tried all this but in the end , once you have eliminted everything else , whatever remains , no matter how unlikely , is always the root problem .

I run horribly high mileage and previously abused Mercedes Diesels (three of them) but I'm *very* picky about the details and I never have these problems in spite of always having dirty fuel troubles no matter where I buy my Diesel fuel .

Last Q. : how long ago did you last replace the secondary , screw on fuel filter ? .

This is the third time I have been towed because the vehicle stops running.  Some facts are:
1. Vehicle has 1/4 tank or less.
2. Temp is 25 degrees outside.
3. Diesel Kleen (white bottle) added
4. When operating the hand pumpfule comes out of the hand pump but none out of the bleeder screw on the fuel filter canister.
In the past I looked and the fuel lines were open to the fuel filter.

Any help is so appreciated.  This is really strange.

No worries , topics drift to and fro , that's the sign of a _good_ forum .

I can just imagine me getting a judgement against them then my Mercedes' and my truck , quite possibly the house too , would all go up in flames , no thanx .

[diesel_mercedes] 240D : Death By Children

A College boy in a 240D ? only if you _hate_ the car and want to see it die horribly .

I love our '82 240D and plan to still have it long after the fancier 300D's are sold .

College kids _always_ over speed the engine and that's certain death .

Oddly , SWMBO told me I drive the 240D automatic too fast , I think it's dog slow but I like it anyway ~ it _barely_ keeps up with traffic and doesn't go any faster if I give it the gun so I _never_ give it over 1/2 throttle , not ever .

as follows:

Attention diesel people (you know who you are!), Selling my 84 190d, has
a 5 cylinder 2.5 engine transplant & 5 speed tranny, 15" wheels, newer
headlights, ok tires, good brakes, new ignition key tumbler, ball
joints, new glo plugs, shocks r good, no wrecks -clean title - a well
maintained, 35mpg car, OK interior. About 290K miles on car, 210K on
engine..upgrades/engine/transmission replacement done for
driveability!!! ..the power windows work, sunroof works, heat works but
ac needs to be connected, but it was working before the 5 cylinder
engine was installed - so it is easily fixable- it runs great, would
drive it anywhere as it sits, goes 70mph + up the grade on the 14 fwy.
Cosmetically car is OK+, has a little clearcoat peel, yellow paint,
little dings, etc..interior is mb tex, and is complete, but old. the car
drives straight and smoke is minimal (normal- no blowby). Keeps up with
modern traffic, won't win drag races, but way better than the 4 cylinder
190d, and the 5 speed is really what the Germans had in mind when they
made this car. XLNT commuter transportation, I am 2nd owner (I think),
have put about 140K on this car commuting back n forth from palmdale to
LA for work. Selling because I just bought a Golf TDI and I also have an
87 190d 2.5 turbo so I have too many cars right now. if interested just
call to get the whole story on the car - its a good car, not perfect,
but I have kept this car in pretty good shape for the last 3 years I've
owned it. Not too many of these cars out there, and most are automatic,
and 2.2 engine - this one rides great - so call mike ..car is currently
with my mechanic in Fontana, near intersection of 15 and 10 fwys - will
show by appt...calling is better than emailing!! phone number is
available by clicking the "contact" button

well, I think part of the issue would be getting it here from there.
probably the freight would be more than the engine. Let me look into

I think the engine is good from everything I can see.  Valve cover leak at the top.

I am not good at pricing these things and I have only been at this for less than two years so I really don't know a fair price.  What do you think?

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Blower for a w123, anyone used the Uro brand for this?

It seems like that a '77 240D should have the same blower.
according to

http://www.ecklersmbzparts.com/mercedes-123-chassis-blower-motor.html http://www.ecklersmbzparts.com/mercedes-123-chassis-blower-motor.html

1977, 1978 MERCEDES-BENZ 240D fits

Was the blower functional at high and low settings? (brush wear)
Where are you located?

Thanks
