[diesel_mercedes] OOPS

It seems I've neglected to check my 300CD's ATF often enough ~ I got off the freeway @ 05:00 this morning and lost almost all drive ~ the engine would rev. up but the car wouldn't go faster than a walking pace ! EEK ! .

I imagined my tight , hard shifting Sports tranny all ruined and me having to drive it 12 + miles to Victor for overhauling , my bank account has $364 in it and he needs $1,800 ~ $2,000 , not good .

I kept the engine to 2,000 RPM's and eased it across Chinatown to work at a walking pace , stashed it in the L.A.P.D. Garage and began working , after the boss and others showed up I went out and checked the tranny , the tip of the dipstick was dry (gasp) so I added just enough ATF to reach the " full " line with the engine off , then I started it and slowly added ATF bit by bit until it reached the  " low " line and took it for a test drive , it shifted nice and tight like normal so I ran it up on the freeway a few miles to bring it up to operating temperature as ATF expands by about 10 % so you never , _EVER_ want to top it off until you're _certain_ it's fully warmed up .

Too much ATF can cause the seals to blow , or if you're really unlucky , the fluid will aerate (foam) and cause the tranny to slip and grind itself to death in 20 miles .

All seems well now so I'll top it up after I drive it home .

Whew ~ I think & hope I dodged a bullet here .

That'll teach me to look after my car as closely as I look after my animals , no matter how much I'm hurting .

It could have died @ 0-Dark:30 in a *very* bad part of town where I drive pretty much daily , that would have been a bad thing .

RE: Re: [diesel_mercedes] Leaky Bolt

AlumaSeal doesn't come in bottles , it comes in small plastic tubes . I hope you got the right stuff .

Are you familiar with " Time Serts " ? these are solid thread repair tools , much better than Helicoils and if properly installed they're not only permanent but they're leakproof to boot ~ I use them on all manner of alloy engines and parts ~ cylinder heads , manifolds , carbys , on and on .

Because they're solid , they work well in holes that have been stripped them mangled by kids , DPO's & DPM's . , Helicoils only work in prefectly aligned holes .

Best of all they're made right here in AMERICA , used to be made in El Monte , Ca.

That looks like bad business to me ~

If you took/stole my old vehicle and customized it , I'd be _livid_ .

[diesel_mercedes] RE: Strange but True

Chip ;

There's _NO_ conundrum here ! .

Go buy it back and then cancel the police report .

Or , call the Police and ask for the head of the Auto Theft Detail / Division , ask him (not any old body who answers the 'phone) WHY THE HELL YOUR CAR WAS TOWED AND YOU WERE NOT NOTIFIED WHEN YOU FILED A STOLEN VEHICLE REPORT .

As far as I can tell , you love your Coupe as much as I love mine so I'd be working this angle fast before the Tow Yards guys figure out what a sweet car it is and keep it....

No matter how this all breaks out , it's nice to know you're _not_in a high Auto Theft neighborhood after all =8-) .

My Mercedes 300CD turbo coupe was stolen from in front of my apartment complex mid-September of this year.  I had comprehensive on the car and my insurance company has made me a settlement offer.  I have been holding out for more.

My Chevy Suburban was stolen from in front of my apartment Monday of this week.  Went to bed Sunday night, got up to go to work Monday to an empty parking lot.
So....I called the police department as I had done with the Mercedes to report to stolen Mercedes, called the apartment complex to tell them my car was stolen, as I had done with the Mercedes and called my insurance company (who was in total disbelief) to report my stolen Suburban, as I had my Mercedes.

Got a ride to work, on the way to work, I got a call from the police who informed me that my Suburban had not been stolen, but had been towed from my apartment complex.  Gave me the name of the storage facility and $273 buck later I was walking onto the lot to pick up my Suburban.

To my disbelief, there on the lot sat my Mercedes!  I never let on that I had seen my car, but I started asking about several of the vehicles and if they were for sale.  I finally pointed over to that really pretty Mercedes coupe and ask about it.  He said he could not sell it yet but check back in a couple of weeks and he should be able to give me a price.

So.....I have a conundrum!

I know what I'd do.  Ask for a test drive.  Solo if possible.  If not complain the right wheel was loose.  Get the guy to check it out and drive it back home when he got out the car.  Lawrence Rhodes...

 Yes Mike ;

It might .

Still and all , it's a temporary repair ~ the alloy water pump housing is available new and isn't overly expensive .

       Mike Asked :

I have a coolant leak problem.  It is because one bolt hole is stripped that bolts the water pump housing on thus causing the leak.

Might Alumseal work for that?  Thanks.

Did you find out why the suburban was towed?? Was the Benz parked in the same spot?
