But why air cooled? Just wondering, seems liquid would be a better choice?

[diesel_mercedes] turbo oil leak
Hi all I am writing with a question re my 82 300D turbo, 200k miles, original motor including original Garrett turbo. I have an oil leak that seems to come from the rear end of the turbo (e.g., where the exhaust leaves the turbo into the flexible part of the exhaust pipe). After a drive it leaves several drips on the ground. I am assuming that some rear seal within the turbo is leaking. I am writing to see if anyone can help me further diagnose this - is this reflective of some simple oil seal change, or does it likely mean the bearings and or impellar shaft have too much play and would also need replacement? I am willing to just replace the turbo if need be but it would be ideal for me to understand better what this type of oil leak means. The car has been well cared for including frequent oil changes, but the first owner (1982-1996, 125k miles) probably did not let it idle much before shutting it off. Thank you for any help. Andrew |

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Re : they are _Right_ about us
I'd love to find an air cooled diesel, or two, for projects I'm working on.
One being my portable saw mill.
even a smaller one would be ok.
just in case anyone sees one somewhere.

In the real world, there are things to beware of. Deutz engine parts are so
expensive, it might have made better financial sense to scrap the truck than
to try to repair the engine..

Brian's right, Nate - get that Deutz AirDiesel if you can! I'm a liker
of those air-cooled beasts of engines..... remember your air-cooled VW days!

[diesel_mercedes] Replacement of ball joints
Going nuts my 1984 300SD has been in the shop for a week, for ball joint replacement. Still waiting for it to be done mechanic has no news but that he is working on it is it that difficult any special tools or procedures required. I know he was replacing tie rods, upper control arms, lower ball joints and shocks.

They were talking about organic dog food on "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" a couple weeks ago. One of the panelists said if he had a life expectancy of 12 years, he'd eat Twinkies every day.
