This is the usual failure mode for Auto batteries but before you $pend on a new battery ;
Get some typ of voltimiter and check it whilst it's running ~ Wally-Mart has those nifty charging gauges you plug into the cigarette lighter and it'll tell you how much it's charging , or you can cheap out and go to Harbor Freight and buy a $3.95 multi -meter , it'll do the same job , just a bit more difficulty is using it .
In any case , what you want to see is : over 13 VDC as you slowly rev. the engine up with the lights etc. off . if it remains at or below 13 VDC , the alternator brushes are probably worn out , this is a super simple fix you can do at home if you're handy with tools .
It's the perfect time to get the correct BOSCH brand # 1 197 311 028 voltage regulator (the brushes come with it , the only way to replace them) , it takes under one hour to install it and this one will out charge _ANY_ of the ones you get with the rebuilt $100 + alternator no matter what the lying sack behind the counter says .
O,T.O.H. , if it shows 13 + VDC as soon as you rev. the engine a little bit (NEVER race the engine !) , I'd say the battery is likely kaputi .
Wally-Mart had the best price for the _correct_ battery , many Auto Parts Stores tried to sell me a Volvo Diesel battery , it's wrong and bad for your car .

I took SWMBO's wagon to work and then home the other day as the new (used , lovingly rebuilt) horns didn't work and the grille's plastic insert was beginning to look pretty rough from the sun .
The horns were a blown fuse , maybe I blew it whilst testing the BIG 1958 High Tone horns I rebuilt and installed , not sure but we'll soon know .
The grill , new ones are available from " URO " but the stamped steel surround SUX big time , it's cheesy , thin and poorly made so I get a good original German surround , dis assemble it carefully setting all the various clips , bumpers and screws aside (because the URO parts SUCK) , then I hand polish the chrome as it's *very* good quality and always shines up like new .
Then I swap the clips onto the new plastic insert and re assemble it to the now shiny German surround , adjust the aluminum strips for proper fitment and re - install using again, the correct original German ATF screws .
I top it off with a N.O.S. German OEM Mercedes badge and hood star ~ WOW ! the whole front of the car looks nice now .
I replaced the plastic headlight surrounds last year when I got a pair affordably .
SWMBO is pleased as am I .
As I now have a collection of used W-123 grilles & parts , I'm going to try and assemble at least one decent one out of the best parts , we'll see how that goes .

Electrical gremlins , in the main ,are usually bad connections here and there so be wary of the lazy " mechanic " who wants to cut any wires or re wire anything .
I didn't notice you mentioning any high oil usage before ~ does it smoke , puke it out or just has myriad leaks from all over the engine ? .
" Motor Honey " is BAD STUFF that will soon KILL THE ENGINE .

Hm ;
I drove SWMBO's Euro Spec. '84/'85 300TD the other day to work on it and filled it up , the fuel economy was 22.? MPG's and this with all in town driving by SWMBO , no AC as it quit .

I know that yard ! I got a cherry Becker Electronic there for $15 a few years ago as I was passing through ~ I saw the sign and just *HAD*
to stop in and have a look , dirt floor but lots of W-123's, mostly 240's , several looked ready for the used car lot =8-^ .
They don't separate them very well , I found Mercedes' all over the yard , no particular area so I had to walk the whole yard in the 100° sun .
My advice is free and usually worth 1/2 the cost .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re : Oil Choices Sub Topic : FLAME WARS !
Didn't mean to start a war! Geez.
I can send you the recipe for the chicken if you want. In fact it came from Gilroy, CA, the garlic capital! You gotta love garlic to love this chicken. It was delicious by the way! :)
Boy howdy did you ask the $64 Question Trish ! .
Everyone has an opinion on this but few have any real idea what they're talking about so much yelling and name calling always ensues whenever oil domes up .
Sort of like politics , knowhutimean ? =8-) .
Anyways , in the end , using a good quality oil and _HOT_ changing it along with the oil filter , will be sufficient to keep your soon to be beloved Mercedes running for years to come .
Synthetics are always better than the Dino based oils it was designed and built to use *but* they tend to find weeps & seeps moreso than do Dino based oils .
Me , I use the thinnest multi - viscosity Diesel rated oils I can find as I live in the Southwest and run all my engines _hard_ . 5W-whatever , not -50 as the polymer chain that allows 10W-50 is rather long and doesn't stand up well to harsh service .
I wish you were here around _MY_ birthday ~ I'd love some Parmisan Chicken ! =8-) .

[diesel_mercedes] My car is possessed!
OK so today is the 4th time I've driven my car since we got it back on the road and only the 3rd time ever to drive at night.
We were leaving camp when all of a sudden the car started screaming at us from what we figured was the emergency blinker button. We turned them on and off and eventually the screaming stopped.
Then the seat belt light started blinking on and off, then the glow plug light! Then the light for the shifter went on and off! All the way home...45 minutes it was a freaking light show on my dash! The car is still blowing oil like crazy. I feel sorry for anyone behind me. It's embarrassing! I put in a quart of Motor Honey Stop Leak, drove the specified miles...150 and it's still leaking. [diesel_mercedes] Re : Flex Disk Vs. U-Joint
BIG difference ! .
The Mercedes Automobiles tend to have the final drive unit ('pumpkin' ,' chunk' etc,) mounted to the unibody along with the transmission so the drive shaft doesn't move up/down , it only spins . thus , a flat rubber " Flex Disc " is used to absorb vibrations .
Lesser Automobiles have the entire rear axle and final drive as a single unit , attached to the vehicle by the suspension so the drive shaft not only rotates but it must , perforce , move up and down several degrees at the rear end and a pair of U- Joints are used to allow this drive shaft movement .
Mercedes and other fine cars, do use Constant Velocity or " CV " joints between the drive axles on each drive wheel and the fixed pumpkin , this ' CV ' joint works similarly to a U-Joint although it is constructed *very* differently .
I've never seen a W-123 with any U-Joints yet but there's also much I don't know about Motor Vehicles .

I have Discount Tire stores all over my neck of the woods. The only time I've ever ordered tires was to get something specific that wasn't readily available locally. Even then, your local tire shop should be able to get it for you. Even with the $100 credit you still get dinged for shipping. On the off chance that you actually save some money I doubt it will be enough to compensate for the PITA factor. All that said I'm going to plug the Nokian EnTyres I have on both my Merc's. Quiet, good in the wet, low rolling resistance and the increase in fuel economy was noticeable.
