Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: What's it worth?

I'd say the old engine is worth scrap; maybe $100, give or take.  Scrappers pay by the pound.  If you go that way, remove the cam/valve cover, the bottom engine cover (or "oil pan"), and anything else that's pure aluminum, and have them weighed separately:  Aluminum is worth MUCH more than iron/steel/mixed metals.

(I'd wager Nate would have gotten more than $600 if he'd simply just scrapped his old GMC, heart-wrenching that may have been....)

About $600 .

Why not take it to one of those charity vehicles places ? . they'll take it and not comlain it's a beater .

However , be *VERY* careful , I got ripped off , they said one thing then only sent me a $600 tax receipt on a nice truck I'd just finished putting $3,700.00 worth of PARTS ALONE into ~ everything worked perfectly , current tags , so clean you could eat off it blah blah blah .

So _ASK_ what you'll get in tax value and DO NOT leave it behind unless they give you the tax receipt right then and there .

If you have much passing traffic , park it not too close to the road and ask $1,000 for it & take any green you see .

The problem with old vehicles is : they're never worth the $ you put in , all ypou can do is be diligent about up fixin' then then run them for years to get your $ worth back out .

You got skinned going in but it's quite possible you're close to the breakout point where it becomes a reliable daily driver .

Your old engine is worth maybe $150 , the trick is finding someone who'll want it .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Injector Leak

Check the little injector return hoses on top 1st, as they don't last
too long, and may look fine, yet are split on the bottom or something.

I don't keep as much supplies in my trunk as Brian, maybe I should, yet
I do have extra injector return hose in the trunk at all times. In a
pinch, you can try to cut the hose a little shorter and re-attach,
though buy new hose soon afterward.

[diesel_mercedes] 240D Low Fuel Mileage

As I was sitting in the comfy air conditioned 1982 240D awaiting SWMBO to finish shopping to - day , I decided to pop the bonnet and see how the intake screen looked with the engine idling away....the screen is crystal clear (wouldst _MY_ Mercedes look like that) but the secondary fuel filter was glistening with Diesel fuel , now I know where my fuel economy went ~ sadly , the fatory tool kit in this car is missing the 23 MM open end wrench necessary to snug up that filter bolt , I'll get the wrench out of my Coupe to - morrow morning and tweak it then .

Does anyone here use the Mercedes E-Catalog for parts ? I down loaded it and signed up but I can't figure out how to make it work and I'm keen to go looking for those myriad small things I'm sure I need....

I especially want to re load the original tool kit as those are very good quality tools but I can't find any diagrms or parts lists for the tools , Mercedes does sell them , I just need to figure out the correct part #'s I need .

I just ordered up the original screwdriver and it's under $20 (IIRC) and is terrific .

Part # upon request .

TIA ,

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Turbo gasket kit

NO ! .

That gasket kit is for the turbo proper , what you need is the oil return tube seals , I clicked on the left illustration and it's guide # 173 , they don't service that but save the illustration and show it to other partshause' & they'll get what you need .

You'll need to remove the lower front sump (oil pan) , I was able to re use my old gasket as Mercedes uses really good quality gaskets that reguire NO GLUE nor RTV .

I hope this helps .

BTW : if anyone in Cali. orders parts from this place , please let me piggyback two of the old style primer pumps onto your order ~ I need them badly .

This place has lots of printable exploded diagrams for your old Mercedes .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Injector Leak

Yes but ;

Mre often there's a *tiny* leak in the hose and the Diesel dribbles down the injector body & puddles up right where the two halves come to - gether .

You'll need a 17MM open end or crow foot wrench to loosen the fuel pipe then a deep 27MM socket and a l-o-n-g flex handle to both break the old injector loose and to properly tighen up the new or rebuilt one .

Whew ! .

I hate overheating because it brings along too many other problems .

I hope you know to always turn the heater on HIGH whenver it runs too hot .

Now you'll need to check and adjust the valves again and the rubber rockerbox gasket will prolly need replacing as the heat makes it to stiff to seal well .

I had a 1963 Renault Dauphine , it had the wretched Ferlic semi-automatic clutch that worked (partially) via the field coils in the Paris - Rhone generator , of course neither the generator nor the ferlic clutch worked.....

It was uber cute though .

I paid $35 for it running and still managed to loose $ on it .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Nate would be proud

Well ;

Nate tends to buy junkers anyway so maybe not too proud....

I think buying any Mercedes gasser will be a big let down to you .

Chucks' (?) 300SD with working AC for $1,200 sounds pretty good to me , of course there's work needed but if it passes the Oil Cap Test and isn't rusty , dented and on and on , it might well be your salvation .

I thought you said the bad engine was long gone , no ? . Hm .

OBTW : the Lonely Hearts Club will have the regular meeting this Friday , don't forget to bring a Cassrole .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Turbo gasket kit

I couldn't find it on AutohauzAZ, called and they said they didn't have it.  Checked Peach & Rock, then googled it and Ecklers came up.

A friend told me about the DART van pool that I can take to the new job in downtown Dallas.  Costs between $25-$40 a month, depending on how many are in the van, (they were closed when I called, so I won't know firm price till tomorrow)  so I might sell this crappy car and get a good one in the near future.  I won't need it for work and I won't have to worry about paying for parking.  I won't have to deal with traffic and can plug in my headphones for a nice meditative ride to/from work.  It might be a good way to network too. I just hope no one in the van pool stinks...B.O. perfume/after shave, gas, smoker...:)

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: I thought I was feeling like the Maytag Repair Man.

Having been raised by and among automotive Francophiles, more than a few Dauphines were tried.  Eventually, most settled on Peugeots (403s and 404s) for their build quality, (relatively) conventional design, and longevity.  (My godfather put over 200,000 miles on a 403 before he finally sold it, running, to some hapless college kid in the early '80s.)  Unfortunately, the 504s of the 70s ended the great love affair....

Diesel content (though not MB):  Few are aware that Winnebago made a mini-RV, "LeSharo" (and stablemate Itasca Phasar) based on the Renault Trafic minivan, from '84 to '91.  For the first three years, it was powered by a 2.1 litre, four cylinder Renault indirect injected turbo-diesel.  Yeah, it wasn't, and isn't, for everyone....

Brad,

This should be a simple belt change. I have not done the job yet, but I'll post up any thing interesting. I don't think anything is seized.

The Renault was the poor man's excuse for a VW bug in the late 50's and 60's. They were pretty much pieces of junk, but the French body styles on the 2cv and the Dauphin gave grown on me over the years.

My dad had both of these models, but you hardly ever see one any more.

So what is it about life that once you think you have a little part of it cornered up the way you want it, you don't?

I was poised to post up an email last Friday around the whole Maytag Repair Man idea.  My coupe was running perfectly and I was bored with nothing to do and found myself looking for Renault Dauphin's again.

Just then I happened to glance down at my instrument panel and was surprised to find my temperature gauge in my coupe almost in the red.
Looking a little further down my red alternator light was also on.

At 85 mph I was not completely sure that I had blown a fan belt, but I was pretty sure.  Lucky for me on two fronts that diesels don't need electricity to run and that when I drove below 40 mph my motor stayed below the red mark by a good bit.

Limping home I raised the hood and confirmed my earlier diagnosis.  The thought of this Renault Dauphin quickly faded from sight again.
