Re: [diesel_mercedes] Parts Needed

Hi Nate,

A quick search on Craig's list had this pop up:

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lgb/pts/5128746588.html
I'm parting out my 1983 Mercedes Benz 300d turbo diesel. This has been my daily driver for a year and a half. Engine and transmission are in great condition. Nice dark blue interior. I will sell parts or whole car. This car only needs a few small things to be a good driver again. Call Jon if interested.

Also a 300D secdan or Coupe fuel tank .

I'll take the parts off/out if anyone spots them in a junkyard or anywhere else .

[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy Check '84 300CD Slushbox

Dead turbo and blowing black smoke at all engine speeds and loads Max .

I'm hoping it gets better now , I still want to pop test the injectors (I don't have the tester) and fiddle the throttle linkages as I know they're wrong .

My poor old Diesel Sports Coupe has been _wheezing_ worse and worse , why I finally installed the turbo kit I bought over a year ago .

[diesel_mercedes] Road trip Speeds

I remember driving a 1963 VW Micro Bus (# 241 DeLuxe) over the Continental Divide via old Rt. 50 , towing a 1957 Canadian Standard VW Beetle , with tools and parts,  my Ex Wife and best friend , they were tired and missed it , *very* beautiful , I only needed second gear so i was able to maintain 25 ~ 30 MPH , this in a swing axle Typ II with a carefully tuned single port 1500 engine .

IIRC your '71 had the first year doal intake port 1600 but was crippled by super lean carby jets and retarded ignition timing for emissions ~ easy to fix , thise things were screamers after I tuned them .

[diesel_mercedes] Road trip/ charging issues sorted

I feel your pain Rob ;

As I've been driving mostly cheap or really old vehicles my entire life , I'm comfortable toodling along in the slow lane @ 60 , the 240D loves it there and gets fantastic fuel mileage .

Criss crossing America in 36HP VW's was fun for decades , I enjoyed the sight seeing aspect a lot .

Once in a while though , I get a " wild hair " and need some speed .

SWMBO doesn't like me to exceed 60 MPH and complains loudly when I make up for that by whizzing through the corners without slowing down any....

The cheapo meter has 3 lights for Alt: low, normal, high. (and 3 for the battery)
Before it was flickering on 'low', now 'Normal' most of the time.
I also checked under the hood, and it read fine too. (I forgot the exact numbers)

I'm sure you're right, though I don't know if I could stand driving 60 all the way up there.
The '85 has higher gears.

That said, years ago I drove a overloaded Toyota PU w/ a trailer across the country, and took most hills at 20mph.

[diesel_mercedes] Turbo Overhaul In The Rain

Thanx Rob ;

I remember you writing about it , wasn't sure if it was you or whomever .

I'm not out of the woods yet , not by some margin .

Remember I recently posted it simply refused to rev. over 3,000 RPM ? . to - day I drove it 110 miles or so so I decided to let it out a bit , got on the Harbor Freeway @ PCH and as soon as I could I held it to 3/4 throttle and was pleased to see it climb to 93 MPG (GPS) before traffic forced me to slow down to 75 ~ 85  .

It's been a long time since this car went that fast , I'd forgotten how nice and stable it is at high speed .

Still and all , if I give it too much (like 1/2) throttle @ 60 MPH , it'll downshift and I know this is dead wrong .

It also labors too much as it runs up through the gears .

I'm going to borrow my Son's boost gauge and see what's going on there .

As it turns out , I bought a new SEARS Craftsman snap ring pliers and cannot find it _anywhere_ .

Does anyone have a copy of the W-123 Factory Shop Manual on CD - R ? I had a copy years ago but can't find it and need Technical Info , time to do my homework .

It's 90* F and 93% humidity , I'm dying here .

Nate,

I rebuilt my turbo a few years back, and it's like night and day, much more power and response.
I just used 2 HF picks, and yes it was a PITA, to install the clips.
If someone hasn't rebuilt their turbo in the 30+ yrs the car's been around, it needs it.
