Re: [diesel_mercedes] Idling

Well, hes back. Try and tell a 26 YO boy about dangers. Drove to Boise from N.W. Montana to buy his first airplane, 13 hours, drove almost all night, and yep, he plans on flying when he gets back today, because he has to go back to work on Monday. Youth, gotta love em. Max

OTOH he seems to be aware and takes some care , maybe he should leave the windows closed and run the fresh air vent and heater as the cabin has  venting in the 'C' pillars making open windows unnecessary .

Hey guys, what do you think about idling a gas car for hours to sleep in the car at night? When my boy takes long trips. he will pull over ,leave the motor running to run the heater, for hours. Yes we talked about carbon monoxide, he told me he leaves a window down. I was thinking about oil pressure and stuff along those lines.   ????????????????

Just changed my fuel filters, filled the big one up with Moly Purge, hit the pump for a few strokes and it started on the first pop, wow happy days. Getting the car ready for a run to Reno and Cali. max

Well Mark ;

It's grey/black smoke so I *think* so ~ typically turbo smoke is a steady thin white or blue smoke at all loads / speeds .

I overhauled the turbo last Summer so it's entirely possible I didn't do it right but before I go there , I need to address the excess fuel issue .

I was looking at an '85 300D yesterday and the IP had been removed without touching the oil filter canister ~ I'd love to hear the details of that as I want to swap out the IP on my '84 Coupe .

I'm already resigned to replacing the turbo but not until I know the fuel injection system is 100 % .

Are you sure the smoke is coming from the IP?  From the symptoms, it could be from leaky shaft seals in the turbo....

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Excessive Exhaust Smoke

Nate,

If you rebuilt the turbo, it should be fine, as long as the parts weren't damaged.

I had some smoking issues that I hoped would be sorted by a Turbo rebuild, yet they weren't.
The turbo rebuild sure helped the power, and was well worth it.

[diesel_mercedes] Junk Yarding

Tom and I have been scouring So. Cal. Junk Yards looking for a gas tank for his 1979 Dodge pickup truck , in the Pomona U-Pull It self service yard is a 1985 300D that appears to have been in very good shape until it's last owner , some sort of mouth breather typ who ran it into the ground .

There's not much left , the passenger's side front seat was original and intact , no holes no even cracks in the Palomino colored M-B Tex although it was beyond filthy both from food and dirt debris in the pleats plus amazing amounts of greasy hand prints over the entire lower half , the springs are not only not broken but they're stiff like new and looking up inside it shows the buns and fabrics to be pristine so I bought it and will have a go at cleaning it and see if I really can rebuild my Coupe's driver's side seat using the passengers side springs and coverings .

This yard has recently raised it's prices dramatically but they were  a little it flexible , I also got the rear speaker covers , a driver's side armrest and three of the steel fuel injector to IP pipes as my Coupe is still weeping off the # 1 element , it looks to me like it's weeping from under the steel pipe's nut , I have cleaned and polished every thing and tried another pipe , next will be replacing the threaded element proper but I'm still up to my elbows in other jobs and so don't want to stop my Coupe's daily driving duties .

Stand by .
