Re: [diesel_mercedes] 240d engine in Jeep acting up

I can't remember who suggested I do a warm compression test. But to whomever it was a hearty thanks. It has taken me several days to find the correct o-rings to seal up my compression tester. But I found them today and inasmuch as I drove the jeep to get the o-rings,  it was hot when I got home and installed them in the tester. So the good news is as follows . . . 350 psi, 340 psi, 350 psi, 340 psi. And these are close approximations as there was still a tiny bit of leak down, but they are close enough for me to relax about the condition of the engine itself. This is a spread of 10 psi over a range or 350 psi which is one part in 35, which is less than 3% from low to high.  So the issue is the fuel system and NOT the engine proper.

A knowledgeable friend suggested a broken return spring under the plunger. Being a plausible thing I pulled the outlet and investigated. I watched as the plunger rose and fell as it should when the engine was turned. But replacing the outlet gave me the idea of adjusting it for maximum flow. In other words, turning it as clockwise as I could. Wow what a difference. Still not great but another big step toward a smooth idling, smooth running engine.

And then something ocured to me - the DPO was a "mechanic" according to his father (whom I bought the car from), but not very good at it. And it ocured to me that he might have goofed with the IP and screwed it up. So tomorrow I am going to adjust the shims under that outlet in order to lower that #4 outlet body to see if that will smooth out the idle by forcing more fuel through #4. I figure I don't' have anything to loose since my option is a complete teardown or trying to find a good used IP.  Either way the pump will be replaced.

I will keep you all posted.

Bogy.

RE: [diesel_mercedes] 240d engine in Jeep acting up

what type jeep do you have the 240d engine in?
Any pics or links?
I like the idea of a 240 or 300D in a jeep
what fuel economy do you get?

NAPA sells a kit
https://www.napaonline.com/napa/en/p/BK_7001006/
that detects exhaust gases in the
coolant.  I've also used an exhaust gas analyzer at a
local
independent auto repair shop.
CO2 measured in the 60PPM at the radiator neck.  Replaced
the
head gasket and it was down to
4-5PPM.

At the same time cleaned the
cooling system with oxalic acid crystals, then a rinse with
water
or baking soda.  White vinegar
works well too.

That was one of the
clues I didn't see. There was no loosing of cooling
water or graying of the oil. So I figured there was no
breaks in the head gasket
that would swap those two fluids. The one thing that
didn't exist in last nights test was pressure in the
cooling system. So there could be no way for cooling water
to enter the cylinder (and adversely affect the combustion)
if there was a crack. But since
there was no air entering the cooling system I ruled out
such a crack.  There is no sign of oil in the cooling water
either. It is starting to look like it was a sticking valve,
sticking ring or rings, and/or sticking piston in the fuel
pump for that cylinder.
And the MMO might have just loosened it/them up. I will
know more this evening.

If
there is any chance that water is getting into your oil, it
should show as dropping oil pressure. I saw this once on a
log truck. Stop
immediately and look at the oil. If so, get towed to a
place of repair.  Bill in Oregon

Tonight
I am some combination of befuddled, encouraged, surprised,
delighted, and cautiously optimistic. Let me 'splain. I
came up with an idea to either prove or eliminate from
consideration
the possibility of a head gasket leak or a cracked head.
Such a malady would not only add unwanted water into the
combustion chamber at certain times in the cycle, but it
would also force gas bubbles into the cooling jacket which
would then find their way
to the radiator. Seeing them is sometimes difficult so i
came up with the device shown in the picture. This way any
bubbles would rise through a relatively quite column of
water and could more easily be seen. After an hour of idling
the engine was up to temperature
and had been for 30 minutes. Absolutely no sign of that
steady stream of bubbles that would indicate a leak. But it
was also not running rough either. Hmmmmm. This is a good
thing to be sure and I think I know why. Last night I added
a cup of Marvel Mystery
Oil to both the crank case and the fuel. I have seen this
stuff free up stuck valve lifters and return an engine that
sounded like it had 3 loose rods to quiet smoothe runnings.
Well it ran for a half hour or so last night and then I shut
down. That got it
circulated through both the oil and fuel systems where it
could reside while dissolving sludge and varnish. And I
think that is what must have happened. Since there was no
leak into the cooling jacket that left rings, and valves.
And as of this morning it
occurred to me that it might also be an injection pump
failure in that cylinders outlet. So I may have cured it by
the use of the MMO. I will do this all again tomorrow and
see if these results repeat. If it rins good for
tomorrow's test I Will consider the
issue closed. I won't ever know what was ultimately

wrong. But I guess I will just have to live with that. I
will let you know what happens. Peace.
