O.K. ;I thought I'd sent some trip details but can't seem to find them .Out Teenage Foster Boys got five days at Summer Camp so SWMBO said 'I got us a room at a resort in Indio, Ca., LET'S GO !'.
I changed the oil, adjusted the valves, replaced the right rear door window lift and a buncha other small things, we hit the road Friday 6.16, stopping at a ProPel HPR Biomass Diesel fuel station to fill up and charge the leaky AC with two cans of Chill-40 .The AC worked O.K., the power (acceleration) loss was significant but we cruised right along @ 60 ~ 70 MPH and didn't need to slow down for any hills .Reaching Indio, Ca. it was 116° F @ 4PM, whew . I checked the oil and so on, everything looked jake to me .The next day it was 120° F and SWMBO wanted to go out for lunch, @ 165 miles we were waiting for a red light when vapor began spewing out from under the right front of the hood/fender area, ~ I punched the HVAC to MAX heat (to maybe prevent the engine from overheating if a coolant hose had broken) and pulled into a parking lot, it turned out the AC blew spraying R134a and PAG oil all over the alternator and right side of the engine, inner fender well and so on . a serious mess I won't fool with right now .Punched the 'EC' (non AC HVAC) button, rolled all four windows down and motored on, the car not giving a whit either way .Wednesday it was 114° F so of course we were out and about in the sunny fun again four windows down, engine loving the hot air and running very strongly indeed .It ran at close to 100° C with the AC working, now it's running 85° ~ 90° C depending on our speed, this is fine and dandy, good to know it's not overheating .The local birds have decided they love the car and have been leaving us gifts all over it, the paint is scorching hot to the touch, it never gets below 102° F here even @ 02:00 so I can't wash it just yet.
Thursday morning just at sunup I went out with a bucket of cold water and a ringing wet dish towel, laid it over the bird mess and allowed it to soak in a few minutes then it wiped right off and I didn't see any etching in the paint .@ noon we hit the road home at at freeway speeds (60 ~ 70 MPH) we buzzed right along, the engine heated up to 95° C on the longer grades and cooled off to the correct and normal 82° C on the flat and during down grades, this in once again 120° F heat so I am well pleased with the cooling system and will soon flush and refill it with new coolant .Returning home Wednesday afternoon it was 100° F out @ 4PM, I stopped to check the various fluids, the ATF (heat expansion is normal with ATF) has risen to slightly over the 'FULL' mark on the dipstick and is a bit dark, I have been meaning to change the ATF including the torque converter as the tranny shifts *perfectly* , only the front (T.C.) seal appears to weep a tiny bit so I'll live with it .The engine didn't use a drop of oil in almost 400 hot Desert miles, mostly freeway use and it's still dry as a bone (no oil leaks/weeps/seeps like my Diesel Sports Coupe does) from the last time I washed it a few weeks ago.
I'm trying to contact the one guy I trust to up grade the AC compressor to a Sanden, replace all the AC hoses and add an over size, cross flow condenser too, to bring it all back up to snuff as SWMBO has decided she wants AC .All in all it was a great vacation ~ five days out and about, reading, relaxing and no serious car troubles .I did run it through a touchless car wash as it was very dusty and discovered that where we stayed had used seriously hard water to water the grounds and the back half of the roof is covered in hard water stains I'll have to address ere long .Moral of this long windy story : don't be afraid to DRIVE and ENJOY your classic vehicles ! .-Nate
