[diesel_mercedes] Fuel filter housing discovery

While changing the fuel filters today, I found only half of the lower
seal on the bolt that goes in the top of the housing. A big chunk was
lodged in the hole in the side of the bolt, pretty much stopping it off.
I wonder where the rest of the seal is?
Even though I had the wrong filter (mine was not a cartridge, but a
spin-on), I did replace the clear one. It was filthy, but was not
clogged as I feared.
Maybe it was psychological, but it seemed to have more pep on the way
home from the shop. The right filter will be here tomorrow.
I sure like having a car that I can get parts for, vs. the Citroen GSA I
used to have! Two weeks wait for an oil filter and twice the price for
shipping!

RE: [diesel_mercedes] 1977 240D

highly recommend Nate's suggestions.   The wrenches are about $90 a pair.  I made my own,

by cutting / bending / welding.  Mercedes Source has a good set too.   Diesel Giant has

a great vid of valve adjusting.

My 70 220 had been neglected (my Dad's car) for years.  I did what Nate suggested below

plus a diesel purge, and could not believe the increase in performance.  Also did a

vac pump rebuild.  Again vids on how to do this.  Check your vac lines too.   Fun to drive again.

Now there is a GP problem….

#1 : get some special wrenches or pay to have it done but have the valves adjusted A.S.A.P. .

#2 : upgrade all the glow plugs to the later 'pencil' typ as your current series setup _will_ fail and when it does all four glow plugs quit .

To do this properly you'll need to replace the early glow plug harness, not hyard to make one up from scratch, use HEAVY GAUGE WIRE as they draw lots of current .

#3 : Do a HOT OIL & filter change, replacing the fuel filters (there's two of them) at the same time, be sure to only use the clear plastic primary intake fuel filter so you'll know whenever some crud gets into the fuel
(happens more often than most realize and the translucent filters mean you can't tell, the car just stops)

#4 : Go to your F.L.A.P.S. and buy a bottle of Poer Service (brand) "Diesel Kleen" in silver ot white bottle and dump 1/3 of it in, save the rest .

#5 : now go drive and enjoy your Classic Mercedes Diesel Economy car, don't be afraid of it .

If you choose 'no E-Mail' in the settings you won't be swamped with unwanted messages, you can always trap the 'reply' address and write replies from your E-Mail inbox .

So here goes again, on the group page. I have a 1977 W123 240D with series glow plugs and the metal relay under the dash. I just bought the car a few months ago and need to get the bugs out of it.
I'm beginning to realize that the car had fairly good cosmetic workover on it shortly before I bought it, and he did a few major things, but he seems to have ignored the basic condition of the engine. Well, that's fine. We can fix that, right?
I think I need to replace every filter. Three tries and then a stumbling start, no smoke. Since fiddling with the relay, that seems better, though the blade fuse looks corroded and I think it would be a smart thing to put a fresh one in.

RE: [diesel_mercedes] 1977 240D

Regarding the change to pencil type GP's;

'70 220D.

The voltage to the first glow plug is 12 volts.  This is the output from the

salt shaker.  Is 12 volts OK to use with pencil type GP's?   I've read that the

voltage should be 9 volts.

Let me know, because I am about ready to order either the Diesel Giant kit

or the Mercedes Source kit (with his reamer).

Thanks,

Warren -

Finally got my email fixed!
Clean the pistons carefully. If they are metal, they are likely to be chrome plated, in which case, any flaws in the plating with mean that the pistons are junk. Just replacing the rubber bits will do no good. If you have new pistons, you should be good to go if you clean out the bore really well, make sure the seal groove is smooth and clean and that the groove for the boot is in good nick.
I've seen this on other makes of cars where there are mixed caliper makers.

Simple enough to do what he did. Hammer out a few fender washers and two new nuts. But I wonder what the original looks like. One piece?
