14.1 volts while running
Terminals and all connection clean. Check grounds. No frayed cables

First thing to do is get it running then connect a volt meter across the battery terminals and see what's the voltage with the engine running ~ it should not drop below 12 VDC @ idle with engine running , everything else off .

If it does , time to buy a !BOSCH! voltage regulator (it has the brushes in it) and replace it .

If it charges 12 VDC + @ idle , try revving the engine slowly , it should *instantly* begin to climb to 13 VDC .

Again if not , the brushes in the regulator are Kaputi .

The system is weird so normal wear & tear of brushes doesn't turn on the warning light .

I keep a cheap charging system gauge plugged into my cigarette lighter at all times because I too got caught out once or thrice .

No need to $pend $eriou$ ca$h on a high grade alternator , just _insist_ upon the BOSCH branded regulator in the yellow box , I have posted the P/N here before , none other charges properly and believe me , I have tried them all .

My 300 TD was warm and running fine.  I turned around to get my son.  Noticed my power windows were a little slow.....I had just started the car and driven a mile or so when I picked my son up.  Noticed blinker lights were dim.  Drove another two miles to a store near my house.  Shopped.  Then the car wouldn't start....luckily my house was down hill.  My son pushed me out of the parking spot and off to home we went.  Parked a half block from the house.  Took out the battery.  It measured 12.26vdc....hmmm should have started.  This morning it was fully charged.  Now what to do?  Is there a fuse involved?  Why didn't the alternator light come on?  Obviously we are not getting enough voltage.  The battery is being drawn down by systems.  Lawrence Rhodes

RE: [diesel_mercedes] Dying battery. Alternator light didn't come on!

I don’t think you could have started a diesel on a 12.26-volt battery. How old is the battery?  That is my suspect. Bill in Oregon

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Dying battery. Alternator light didn't come on!

One thing to look at is the voltage regultor in the alternator.  the brushes do wear.  It's removable without removing the alternator.  If the brushes are badly worn, or missing, the preferred replacement is Bosch, but any one that is readily available will work.
