In 1972 I watched my dad pass up a 1966 AC Cobra because he said the lake pipes would drag. He could have had it for $5,000 from a doctor intern that needed money to finish school. I begged and offered to drop out of college.
My first turn came in 1975 when I took a pass on a 1969 Shelby 500 Mustang. My thinking was that it had that crummy 428 with automatic. I also thought it was a fake compared to what Shelby did in '65 and '66 with the 289's. It could have been mine for $2500 bucks.
Then a year or so later I bought a 190 SL with some rust issues. I reasoned that these underpowered things were such a poor excuse for the real collectors 300SL's. Bought the 190 for $300 and sold it to a guy in Atlanta for $800 and called it good.
Oh, there is also that MGA twin cam that I turned loose in '75 because it was too complicated. It went for $800 too.
Yes, I have much newer examples like above, but they still hurt badly and I'v done enough self effacement for one night.

If if runs and drives good then good swap. These cars will never be super sought after, Max

If anyone is intrested in a nice Volvo, I think a 1966, let me know. My buddy wants to sell it so he has more room for the Ponton. Next I'm gonna sell him one of my 240's. Max

I've been a long-time lurker on this board, but I finally saw something that required a pithy comment or two. eBay auction 220756238976 features the most unusual Benz conversion I've yet encountered. Someone took a gray-market 200D, complete with Euro headlights, and swapped in the drive train (engine and 5-speed transmission) from an early 1980s Toyota Corolla.
Now, I'm quite fond of the Toyota 3TC engine, having run a rusty little Toyota equipped with one up to the 180,000 mile mark before selling it, still running fine, so I could dabble in VWs for a while. However, the idea of putting one in a vintage Benz just seems even more philosophically wrong than just about any other conversion I could imagine. The engine probably has more horsepower than the underbored 615 that it replaced, but still....
I'd love to hear what other people think of this particular project. I particularly liked the way the previous owner mounted the Toyota instrument cluster--under the glove compartment and well out of driver view.

Then put your search term in the box, and hit enter. I got 1000 hits on "alternator" and there are now over 10 years worth of posts. Sure, there are all kinds of odd ball responses but among the offal, there are nuggets of wisdom.

Howdy y'all, I know this topic has been covered before but yahoo's group search feature is kind of buggy so I was wondering if anyone would be so kind as to give me a recap of which higher-amperage alternators can be bolted into the W123s with a minimum of rigging. Thanks,
Jim
[diesel_mercedes] Re: High Amp Alternator bolt-ins for W123s
SAAB 900 ~ it is (IIRC) a 97 ampere unit .
_HOWEVER_ ~ I have found that until you use the one , _specific_ BOSCH brand part number voltage regulator , they'll _all_ have low current and voltage output ~ by simply $pending the $14.00 (list price) on the correct BOSCH voltage regulator , your current , weeney 55 Ampere unit will do just fine and , it's a cinch to change this out , unlike changing the entire alternator...
I'd try this first , be aware your partshaus will try to B.S. you into using somerthing else " oh, they'real;l the same , I've been selling these for years with zero complaints " ~ BULLSHIT .
