Re: Driver side power windows
Ugh. By fiddling with the connectors I got the drivers window to work. The
passenger window will work with the switch on the door. Time to get new
switches? Can they be sprayed with contact cleaner? Disassembled? Lawrence

Lawrence,
Last weekend, Nate and I were going into the P-a-P yard, when the passenger's side rear window on my 126 refused to go up. I regularly run with that window cracked a few inches open to provide nice air flow when driving.
After a few minutes (it seemed like hours) of fiddling, the window finally did go up.
As I say, we were going into the P-a-P yard. So, after getting the truck parts Nate needed, we wandered through the Mercedes section. Found a 124 sedan that had been wrecked in the front end. Cabin was non-smoking and very clean. Popped the window switches out of the center console and took them back to Nate's house.
While he was in his driveway, genuflecting to the 'new' truck parts, I popped the center console out of my 126 and swapped in the switches from the 124. The 124 switches even have 126 part numbers. They were pin-for-pin fit. The windows all then worked fine.
A few days later, while driving back to W.L.A. from downtown, on the I-10, at night, I noticed that the new switches were GLOWING. I can't remember how long it's been since my original switches (now with 360,000 miles on them) illuminated. In fact, the window 'symbols' on the switches had worn through to just being white plastic smudges.
Now I have nice, new looking, glow in the dark window switches and no worries about working windows.
Total time invested, less than 30 minutes. Total damage to the center console wood: NONE.
GO FOR IT on your car. A simple fix, and a comfortable solution.

Do a search in the archives for "window switch clean". Nate in LA did an excellent tutorial on it. It's not at all difficult if you're OK with working with fiddly little bits. Basics are: NEVER SAND! Use rubber/pencil eraser to clean the contacts. I like to use Caig DeoxIT to keep the contacts clean:

Brian's suggestion of keeping a couple extra switches around. cleaned and ready for a quick swap-out. is excellent.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Driver side power windows
Can be disassembled and cleaned. I keep several switches handy that I have cleaned in my spare time so it is an easy switch out when and if the time comes.
