Nate, I bought a new MB blower, as I didn't think the URO one's were going to last, and/or would fry the electronics.

So , I got it running and headed off to the Sta Fe Springs LKQ Pick-A-Part Junk Yard (used to be Ecology) where they had two W-123's , an early '79 240D in O.K. shape that I'da not junked but the last owner decided to not renew the license tags in January , prolly because it needed lots of basic deferred maintenance and the AC was dead etc. , the dashboard was pretty rough from sun damage , car was filthy but straight and solid .

Anyways , some one had heavily harvested the usual E-Bay parts but I was able to remove both rear door window lifts and made some discoveries , might as well learn whilst I'm there ,  right ? .

Although the rear window lifts are marked with both left and right part #'s , they're _not_ interchangeable , I didn't think they were but decided to test just to make sure

FWIW , W116 and W123 REAR window lifts are the same , just make sure you don't foolishly grab the left rear one and walk off and discover your mistake a while later , luckily for me before I'd paid and left the yard

I also found a late production '85 300D that had been seriously smashed in a Freeway string accident where it got hit from behind and pushed into the car in front of it , a sad end to a very nice car .

The trunk was so collapsed I couldn't pry the spare tire out of it's well .

This one yielded a nice driver's side door card in Palomino , a good working HVAC fan (the $100 URO brand one quit working after only a few months )

And some other bits and bobs .

I headed back home and made it 46 miles on the two gallons I'd added before it began to sputter again , I decided to chance things and went home for supplies (clean rags , rubber gloves , starting fluid etc.) before going to the gas station , I *almost* made it to the gas station when the engine coughed and died as I was heading down hill and about to turn in ~ tuns out this station doesn't carry Diesel fuel so I coasted down hill across town to the next place I knew that did , was able to re start the engine and drive up to the pump..... .

I filled the can with two gallons and put 1/2 gallon onto the car's tank because I knew I wanted to stop and fool with it awhile before adding more fresh fuel

It ran smoothly and powerfully across town (short Freeway jaunt , I've been running it throttle pinned as much as possible to blow the crud out of the I.P.) , pulled into the free air place and got to work :

I removed and cleaned the clear plastic fuel screen again (Pic.) as it was again full of the milky stuff plus a little bit of dirt , I decided to blow the tank dry by disconnecting the fuel screen and the cigar hose and blowing into the cigar hose and watching what came out of the tank feed line .

Lots of crud and contaminated fuel , when it stopped blowing I buttoned it all back up , added the two gallons of Diesel in the trunk and Motored on , making another 49 miles before it began to sputter and stall out a few blocks from SWMBO's house , I added the last two gallons this morning before heading out , the two injectors are STILL weeping in spite of me loosening and re tightening them last night .

This last two gallons was purchased in the Chevron station in Monrovia @ Myrtle and the I-210 freeway , the fuel coming out of the pump was _YELLOW_ in color , this can't be good , I suggest avoiding this station or at lest checking before filling your tank with this crap .

So , that's it for now , I plan to work on the wagon's window lifts and so on to - day , if I get time I plan to remove the injector pipes from #'s 3 & 5 injectors , clean and wire brush , re install and if they still leak I have some spares from the junkyard I'll try .

As soon as it stops weeping I'll have to re wash the engine before the soaking of Diesel  fuel attacks and ruins every thing plastic and rubber in the engine compartment and underneath the car .

Good thing I like this stuff , eh ? .

Good stuff. I was dealing with weeping injectors after my previous tip cleaning and thought I my not have cleaned or torqued the body correctly.
On my most recent cleaning I didn't pull the body apart, just checked the torque. Then made sure the heat shield seat was clean and put in new shields. That did it. FWIW. (I think I reused old ones just to try)
re, fuel color, here in Ohio all the diesel I,ve seen since it went ultra low sulfer, looks yellow-green, similar to anti-freeze but more yellow.
In any case you do know how to make progress interesting.

[diesel_mercedes] Nate's Stupid Long Boring Day [6 Attachments]

[Attachment(s) from vwnate1@yahoo.com [diesel_mercedes] included below]

Allllll-righty then .

Delete now and you'll not be bored by further antics of a fool .

I slept late and hit the freeway @ 08:30 , not a good idea in Central Los Angeles if you're running on 'E' with the low fuel lamp lit..... I got into the fast lane of the I-105 Freeway headed East and of course , soon encountered stop and go traffic , right about the time we all came to a standstill the engine began to sputter and cough , dies a couple times before I decided I'm not really up to pushing a 3,700 # vehicle across five lanes during rush hour......

After a moment there was a large gap in traffic behind me so I restarted the engine and Kamakazied sharply (kids , don't try this !)  across all the lanes and made it to the off ramp I was _parallel_ with , sputtered down it and discovered a nice raised median with good sun and no clouds , a gentle breeze.... (pic. # 1) .

I unloaded the trunk (if you have a Toddler look at one of these ' water table ' toys ~ Saturday is my Grand Daughter's third birthday , glad I'd emptied out the trunk as it's HUGE ) (Pic. #@)

When I went under the hood , the clear plastic fuel filter had what appeared to be _milk_ in it , I was shocked and removed the filter and blew it out , re installed it and added the two gallons of Diesel fuel I had in the trunk , discovering that  it's a very good thing I like to carry and use a clean cloth in the funnel to strain any in going fuel as my 40 year old steel gas can apparently needs serious cleaning and de rusting (Pics. 3 , 4 & 5) .

After I primed it using the manual primer pump I realized in my haste I'd forgotten to take a picture of the ' milk ' filled intake screen , this is how it looked with fresh Diesel fuel in it . (Pic. 6)

You can see how occluded it is ~ the red inner screen is hard to see through the milky fuel .

This milky stuff appears to have been emulsified water , it took me quite a while to get it all out of the clear plastic screen , in the end I had to fill it with Ether (starting fluid) , shake it a lot and then blow it out backwards using the tire air hose in a Gas Station before it had zero water residue in it .

Sometime during all this fun #'s 3 and 5 injectors began to weep , a little bit at first but enough to be able to see the injection pulses now and the back of the car is now wet with Diesel Fuel that runs down the side of the engine and drips off , blows into the slip stream...

It got 540 miles on one full tankful before it ran out .
