[diesel_mercedes] More on 1980 TD self leveling system.

The pencil test does work on the accumulators. The used ones I got didn't take much fluid and the pencil went in maybe an inch.  The old ones were full of fluid.  Pencil went all the way in. I flushed out the accumulators but didn't bleed the system. It's filthy. I'm assuming you must run the TD, loosen fittings & bleed till clear fluid runs out.  The fluid in my front vessel is very clean.  Back side not so much.  Is there any danger running with some air in the system? I'm assuming you must bleed in a few different places to get all the air out.  Any pointers appreciated.  Lawrence Rhodes...

[diesel_mercedes] RE: Glow Plug Relay

Nick ;

First thing is to get a volt meter and check the charging system as worn alternator brushes cause low charging & system voltage for a long time before it finally refuses to start .

Next , I'd hie my self off to the junkyard & look for a suspiciously clean glow plug relay , they're often replaced before giving up and junking the car ,horribly $pendy new , cheap as dirt used .

Then you can take the old one apart and hand polish the contacts & clean out the dirt & bugs , it'll prolly work fine again .

-Nate

Nick Asked :

1. Where can I find a latch for the glove box for 1984 300D? Tired of the globe box falling down. I do not need the part on the door itself, but the plastic piece that the latch catches on. . Can not find it online yet.
2. Recently my glow plug light comes on intermittently. Get in the car, turn key and no glow plugs. Crank the car, it tries to start or maybe starts and then light will come on. Next time I get in the car, light will come on. Then it will not. Fortunately we live in CA and car will usually start without it. But if I use the correct starting procedure (two glow plug cycles then start) when plugs are working, it fires up immediately. I believe it is not a light issue but the whole system. Where do you start on an intermittent issue.

thanks, Nick

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Sylvia - 1984 300SD - 300K/mi service + mileage check

One of the reasons Mechanics hate Customer supplied parts ! .

OTOH , I now don't trust but one or two Mechanics so I prefer to provide my own parts , I don't use Chinese crap , almost all OEM be it new or used .

Why tempt fate ? if a thing worked fine for 35 years , you can bet it's cheaper and I'll want to replace it with the same thing .

Quite a list of fixes.

Laughed at this one, I can hear the swearing:
"Install customer supplied emergency flasher switch (defective)"

Assuming those figures are correct, last month it was time for the 300,000 mile service. I've also mentioned a few other ailments, so I made a list, allocated a set budget and contacted my favorite Benzomatic automagician and begged for a few days of his time.....here's what got done....

I'm attributing that to the Mobil1 and less so to the shiny new trans and transaxle flushes. At this rate, if I get an extra 3-5 MPG, the various oils will more than pay for themselves.
