Re: [diesel_mercedes] Weepy / Leaky Oil Caps

Could it be blowby?  There's a crankcase vent that dumps into the intake  All the flow of crankcase vapors should head into the intake.

If there is more air, building up pressure in the crankcase, there has to be an air supply that is larger than what goes down the intake.

I've had that vent hose fall off the air cleaner.  I could see the oil mist spraying out of the engine compartment.

? does anyone else have this issue ? .

I recently ran across a discussion about this annoying issue, one fellow cut his original oil filler cap open and discovered there's a ring gasket between the two pressed to gether metal parts, apparently it dries out and allows oil to wick between the two parts and dribble out those tiny little waffle openings  .

Armed with this knowledge I grabbed an original fuel filler cap, installed the blue rubber gasket to it and slapped it on my Diesel engine ~ the ridge you use to open/close it isn't in alignment but so far nary a drop of oil and I've driven it 90 MPH and have 100 + miles on it .

I tried the various replacement caps, all leaked worse than the originals .

The oil filler cap is not supposed to be vented .

Thoughts ? .

I have more but will wait to hear what others say....

Back in the day of having PAP's at my fingertips, I grabbed all the original oil and fuel caps I could find, and have changed gaskets every three or four years. I may get an eye droppers worth of leakage over five years but it cleans up well. Sure do miss those PAP's in So. Cal. - still cry about not picking the bones off a pristine 1983 like mine in Ontario I got some bric a brac and assumed the car would still be there when I came back, but vultures beat me to it. I'll stop now because I am going to cry.
