[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy Check '84 300TD Slushbox

 

NO AC, Bibor used, mixed in town and freeway driving, lots of lead footed 75 ~ 85 MPH freeway and lead footing it in City traffic too .

Low fuel lamp on @ 393 miles, last tank it went on @ 375 miles so that's better, this time I drove 63 miles with the low fuel lamp lit and it began to sputter a little bit from lack of fuel in the tank about 1 mile from home where I changed the clear plastic intake screen because it had some little bit of coffee grounds looking stuff in it, then I added two gallons from my hand held Diesel jug and went directly to the filling station .

456 miles, 25.5 MPG, I think that's pretty good for this heavy car .

We have a bit longer summer season than that, but not much. The heaters on these cars work really good. Actually these cars are pretty good in snow too, with studded tires and a couple hundred pounds in the trunk.  Looks like a friend here is going to buy my 4spd. Max

If it's leaking slowly there's a dye refrigerant you can add when charging it up, then you'll hopefully _see_ the dye wherever it's leaking / weeping and can -maybe- fix that .

I was told the other day that using later model W126 receiver/dryers and expansion valves changes them to O-Ring seals, usually much less leaky over time .

Rob, yes, there's a relay I forget where but just see if the compressor works, use your teat light to check if it has power to one of the two leads on it and ground the other, it will begin to run, be aware you'll grind it to dust in short order doing this is the coolant level is too low but it's a useful basic YES/NO test .
