Oops .

Sorry Trish .

Anyways , if $ is a major concern , might I suggest keeping the current one for parts as needed on the next one ? .

Whatever it's problems, I'm sure it's better than THIS car:

The Seller is obviously FOS and he says " tons of smoke out the exhaust " so it might be a fuel hog or worse.

Certainly with the bad interior it's at best a $1,500 car but don't go buying it just yet....

Rare doesn't mean Valuable , look at Chevy's Vega or Ford's Pinto .

_ALL_ German cars (I've had more than you can imagine) leak oil due to the use of hundreds of rubber seals and gaskets so this next one , may pi$$ as much oil as what you have now until it gets sealed .

For sure I'd give it a very hard look and drive it hard (freeway , RR Trax @ 55 ~ 60 MPH , dirt rods / alleys as fast as it's prudent) , in this heat for 20 minutes minimum then park on clean cement and let it just idle with every electrical device (' new sound system' usualy means BAD NEWS) running as I crawled over and underneath it , hood popped looking for tells like dime sized oil drips (RUN away !) or the temperature gauge raising more than 1/2 way up , so on and so forth .

It could be " the one " but be aware that Coupes have terrible ventilation so the AC needs fixing else you'll open the rear windows and they'll never close again......

Old cars are after all , old Machines so expect to drop in at least the purchase price before it's 100 % reliable .

Can't you find a decent 4 or 6 cylinder truck for $1,200 ? . I hate to see a Lady walking .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: What do you think of this car?

The car was already sold, which shocks me.

I'm going slow on my next purchase.

We can't keep sharing the truck.  It's got it's own issues now.  Neither of us likes being stranded without transportation.  And if it breaks down we're really screwed.  Nothing to come rescue the other.  I want something local, within an hour drive so I can see it and drive it.

NOW my sister says "too bad I sold my Honda"...it needed work that neither she nor her husband could do and would cost too much at a mechanics but Kevin could have done it.  Oh well.

I know there's another MB in my future.  Maybe not my next car though.  :(  I just need to get out from under this car and get into something reliable.

No Nate, there are far more problems than just the turbo oil drain tube leaks with this pos car of mine and we're both sick of dealing with it. There's still the rear main oil leak.  The fuel filters are new & I put Startron in the tank, but it still won't go over 55mph.

Another worthless poop brown W-116 , nice car but , I can _GAURANTEE_ it needs $2,500 forth of HVAC works before you won't cook in it even with all four windows down . (freeze in winter too)

OTOH , if it runs well , passes the oil cap and leak test , it' prolly a damn good car .

[diesel_mercedes] _Finally_

After how many years searching , I got the correct intake manifold for SWMBO's 1982 240D to - day , Tom and I went out to P-A-P early and he helped me remove it , it turns out the 1982 & 1983 California 240D's both have the same wierd intake manifold with flapper valve and *VASTLY*
improved rockerbox oil vapor recovery/separation system ~ it's *so* good , I may try to adapt it to my 300CD as the constant oil mist into the air cleaner drives me bonkers . (& wastes money) .

So , the rest of to - day for rest and to - morrow too , then Saturday I'll get back at it , I've already ordered in the gaskets , seals and rubber air cleaner mounts Et Al to do the job as soon as I clean it up (I can't go installing dirty & oily junkyard parts now , can I ?) and the new parts come in , I even ordered up the moulded rubber vent hoses
as I want this job to be _done_ and reflect the nicety of the rest of her car .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re : question re engine swaps

If Trish and Nate haven't sufficiently scared you off of this project, let me chime in with some observed specifics:

The two things that are going to be "gotchas" are the transmission and exhaust system, with the starter wiring as an adjunct to the exhaust system.

The transmission for the '79 is the old 622.01/02; the four-bolt pan.  It is quite different from the 622.03, six-bolt pan transmission used after '81.  There's going to be a difference in kick-down linkages, and the later transmission will have a vacuum modulator.  AND, as Nate pointed out, the transmissions used in the W126 had electronic speedometers, so, there's that issue to contend with as well.  Best, as far as connections go, would be to use the transmission out of the '79.  (Although the four-bolt pan transmissions found behind the turbo-engined SDs of the '70s cars had a wider, and therefore, beefier, rear clutch pack and rear band.  But that may be more for the extra weight of the W116-chassis SD than for the extra power of the turbo.)

If you decide to use the SD's six-bolt pan transmission, you'll have to get the mechanical speedometer drive from a later, turbo-engined W123 300D, '81 through '84.  It's possible the drive from a same-era 240D will work as well.

Which brings us to the exhaust system.  Of course, the '83 SD engine has a turbo, while the '79 does not.  You'll have to do some creative cutting/wielding to get the '79's exhaust system to bolt up to the turbo.  Once that is done, you may very well find, as Trish did, that the cables to the starter will be too short to reach past the turbo piping to connect up.

Finally, there may be differences in the radiator-to-engine connections.  I'm pretty sure the '79 has the old, series-wired, "loop" glow plugs: not a deal breaker in itself, but you'll need to swap the glow plug wiring from the '83.  Oh, and you'll have to properly attach the SD's "TURBODIESEL" badge to the back of the '79....

Having both cars, complete, will go a long way to getting past a lot of this.  The dedicated would probably want to swap the starter wiring from the SD into the '79, for instance.

As Trish advised, if you have the time, patience and are OK with having the car(s) laid up while you tackle the job, then, you may come out just fine.  Certainly, don't expect to MAKE money on the endeavor....

Clearing throat here...eh...soon be a serious headache?  It'll be a headache sooner than you think.  Lots of stuff to figure out.  ME?  Never again.  If you have experience, time, money, something else to drive and patience go for it.  Otherwise it's so not worth it.  Sure wish I had checked my original motor before I jumped off the cliff into that project.
