[diesel_mercedes] Guys vs Gals vs ???

You just can't win. Eh?
I use "guys" as a generic term.
It sounds better than "everyone".

THANX ! .

The delivery valve is slightly different shape on the bottom part than are the ones in my OM617's.....

I really appreciate the feed back as I'm always learning .

Remember : we have Guys and *Gals* here too although they don't say much .

Guys: here is a pic of my latest injector tester. I will be putting it on a new jack as the solvents i have run through this one to clean the injectors has ruined the seals. The s shaped piece with the gauge is deliberate. It doesnt drain between uses and there is no air bleeding before making the next test. All the air quickly is expelled within a few pumps and it can be screwed onto an IP delivery pipe to check for check valve operation /failure.

BTW, My engine loping was finally eliminated by replacing the check valve in the #4 outlet pipe. It was pitted at the contact surface and loosing pressure between squirts when the engine warmed up.

For your viewing pleasure I have included a pic of the culprit.

Enjoy, and thanks again for your help in the debugging of my engine.

I thought my Tranny was gone 50k ago, and got the vacuum adjusted, and later was having problems, and had the valve springs replaced (shift kit) and that made it pretty nice until recently, well a year or so. Now mine's sometimes flaring at 2-3, as well as flipping back and forth from 2 to 3 at times, like heading up the hill on Saturday. That got me worried.

YEARS ~ earlier this year I added some " Trans-X " snake oil on the advice of a DieselHead I more or less trust , it not only stopped the leaking but firmed up the shifts too .
Amsoil tranny helped too.

Not long ago there was a cherry '85 300D in a Long Beach LKQ yard , the ATF smelled fresh , the whole car was stripped clean in a few days , I don't remember if they knew to take the tranny , as you said it's a one year only deal , a very good setup indeed .
Took a look, not on their list anymore. crushed...

Is it the same as the SD in '85 ? . I see those occasionally .
Yes, besides the rear. one mech speedo, one elect.

I want to keep the beast, so I'll most likely just get the rebuild, and drive it for another decade.

This used tranny I put in 60k ago, has been adjusted and has new shift kit, which gave me a few more years/ 30k miles. The old tranny, which is still in the garage, lost 3rd and 4th; hopefully it's repairable, so I don't lose this daily driver with AC, or I'll wait until it cools off. Mostly, seems fine on the flat, so fine to drive locally. My '85 CA has a different Tranny than the rest.

I did see a couple gold 300ds, yet no Nate.

[diesel_mercedes] WSW Nozzles

Max ! .

I used to do this in the early 1970's when I drove an Auto Parts Delivery Truck for a while , it was a Ford Courrier .

I used a pin to adjust the nozzles so I could squirt the girls walking on the side walk , right over the tops of the parked cars....

I know , I was a childish jerkhoff but my point is : you can use a pin to re adjust your nozzles now.....

On the other car , after a new pump and cleaning out the tank and the lines, they were crudded up bad,  they did not squirt so I tried to replace them but could not get them out so I shot compressed air backwards tru the nozzles, that worked and they squirt fine now except they squirt right over the top of the car now. I cant make them both hit the windshield . Hope I don't hit some crazy guys car and get shot. It got hot here too, about 90.  Max

Yes Bogy , you're correct , raising the overflow valve's opening pressure also serves to fill the delivery valves faster .

The improvement in power and addition of silky smooth engine cannot be imagined until you've tried this .

The delivery valves can and do wear , get dirty and I now have a bunch that have corrosion damage , this can't be a good thing .

If your testing finds one that's weak , I'd like you to swab the well again after removing the valve components , I have discovered there can be residual crud / dirt inside the I.P. that breaks loose as you take better care of it and it gets cleaner....

I work in fits and spurts , it's hot here now (102° F in the SHADE) so I'm taking a day  off @ SWMBO's request , I can use the rest (if I actually get any) .

Please keep us informed as to what you find ~

My engine rocks quite a bit @ hot idle , I tried loosening each injector pipe one at a time and the rocking didn't change so I'm hoping there's some issue inside the I.P. as i have one to replace it with , from a smooth free clean fuel wreck...

Did I mention that I found some old photos of my Coupe's dash board and did a little bit of quick math , turns out I've put over 70,000 miles on the rebuilt engine .

I just hot changed the oil & filter again , I shoulda taken a photo 'cause it looks so nice and clean right now....

Nate:

I was under the impression that the fuel pressure in the IP galley was due to the check valve on the back of the pump that has a banjo bolt and returns the fuel to the tank. I'm talking about the check valves on the delivery valves. If that is what you are talking about then I am at a loss to explain why. Either way 10 psi should be enough to refill the individual cylinder pumps. Perhaps a check valve and a small accumulator between the fuel filter and the inlet to the IP would smooth out the fluctuations.

On a different note I am now noticing a return of the/a weak cylinder when the engine gets hot. Is it possible that these check valves in the delivery pipes can stick or otherwise not seal properly when they heat up? It's easy enough for me to check. just swap out the valves one at a time until the problem goes away. But that's for tomorrow.

By the way, in my cleaning I found another 6 injectors. I will test them tomorrow too.

Good luck with it all. Keep us posted and maybe we can help.
Bogy.

Thanx ;

I was fiddling with the car to - day and installed a liquid filled American made pressure gauge between the fuel filter and the I.P. to check the transfer pressure .

With the old valve installed and a stretched spring I got 10 ~20 PSI fluctuating rapidly @ idle , revving it up it went to 23 PSI and stayed there , still vibrating the needle .

I then swapped out the old valve for a new one from Ma 'Benz and the idle pressure was 0 ~ 10 PSI and went up to nearly 20 PSI when I revved it , same flickering of the gauge's needle .

I don't know if this is normal or not ? .

[diesel_mercedes] Cheap Cars

It might not have many miles on it .

I used to be a serious VW nut and thought them to be well made .

Turns out that after time the entire sheet metal chassis and body gets flexy if you drive it hard / long enough .

My Son's 1968 VW Beetle , an original Saxomat car with steel sun roof (means lots of extra bracing welded in from the Factory) , was his favorite track race car until it got floppy to the point the handling was compromised .

I imagine a Chevette driven occasionally by some little old lady might still be O.K. , those right hand drive Sedans made for the U.S.P.S. rural delivery , are all long junk .
