RE: [diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy , Tranny Shifting Additive , leaks Etc.

Nate, 'bare bones diesel', that is the essence of these cars.  I drove my Dad's then new

70 when I was on leave, from the bay area to Merced in July.  Ran 80 MPH the entire

way, no ac on the car.  Wow, it just kept wanting to go.  Same car today, and it just

keeps going.

O.K. :

356 miles , mostly with the AC running  28.5 MPG ~ the car is running great , I try hard not to exceed 60 MPH but it creeps up in speed on me with very little throttle .

I see the fuel economy is dropping again , as I checked the oil & coolant I noticed the 4MM fuel return hose from the # 1 injector to the secondary fuel filter was wet right where it meets the filter housing , I'm pretty sure I have spare fuel hose of both sizes in the car and will prolly change it to - morrow morning when I'm up in Newhall & Eggs & Things on Newhall Ranch Road watching a three day Road Rally depart without me .

I was talking to another Diesel Head and he said it's a good thing to add " Trans - X " to older , high mileage slushboxes to help dissolve the accumulated varnish & gum .

Monday afternoon I went to the Autozone FLAPS near my shop and they had _four_ different Trans - X products , all were stop leak and shift improvers , I read each label and couldn't figure out which one to buy , then I noticed a long pint bottle of SeaFoam tranny varnish treatment , it specifically said " NOT A LEAK STOP PRODUCT " so I bought that as I have experience using SeaFoam Gasoline treatment to get old gummed up carbys back working right without taking them apart .

I added 1/2 pint of this product , *just* enough to bring the ATF level up to " full " when fully hot .

In 10 minutes the tranny began to shift firmer , it has 343,XXX miles in it and has been flaring on up shafts for a few years now , it also weeps ATF , that's why I didn't want a ' leak stop ' product : those work by softening up the old , hard seals and often the seals get so soft they stick to the shaft on hot shut down then rip loose the next time you cold start the car , stranding you wheyou might be .

Anyway , this SeaFoam tranny additive works , I am well pleased with the improved shifting .

I hope to get the tranny and engine both rebuilt by August or November of this year .

Did I ever mention how much I like the bare bones base model Mercedes Diesel ?  .

-Nate

[diesel_mercedes] Startron ON SALE !

I still have black crud in my intake screen so when I filled up this evening I added the rest of the bottle of Startron .

On the odd chance the fungus is hiding in the fuel gauge sender , I filled the tank to the tippy top then parked the car so the left side where the sender resides , is low and there won't be any air in it  to - night whilst I'm sleeping and it's soaking in Startron....

I'm good for a few days before I have to fill up again , if the gallon hasn't arrived by the next time the low fuel light comes on , I'll buy the biggest bottle they have on the shelf and dump the whole thing in .

I expect to drive at least 150 miles to - morrow , mostly freeway so we'll see what happens .

Well, I have never suffered from the dreaded "fungus among-us" but in the spirit of preventive maintenance, I bought a jug of 32 oz Startron to split between my 2 faithful 1983 300d's. The $28 jug bloomed up to $38 with tax and shipping (I figured it would cost more than $6 shipping to drive out to the Riverside store and pick it up). Soon, when my wifes back is turned, her car (Martha) will get a once in a lifetime full blown detail job with all the trimmings. I'll call it an early birthday present.

[diesel_mercedes] W123 HVAC Fan

Max ;

The same URO fan fits my '82 240D and my '84 300CD , the 240D has the basic HVAC with rotary controls , the 300CD has the Klima II with push buttons so I'd say go look at the photos of said fan motor on Rock Auto then buy it wherever it's  cheapest .

As far as your Insurance Carrier , it sounds like time to do some comparison shopping .

I just realized my car insurance (state farm) charges  more for the 1980 Mercedes than my 2006 Subaru. I use the subie over the winter and then park it, suspend insurance, do the same thing for the Mercedes in season. I guess I change cars instead of tires. Why drive 4WD all summer?. Anyway I guess its no big deal but these Mercedes are built safe and built to survive crashes. I think its bogus.. Money makes the world go round. Also I just was gonna buy one of the Uro  heater/ac fans Nate mentioned from Arizona Autohaus. But they seem to be only for the CC heat systems, bummer , the other ones are $311. My 240 does not have CC, wonder if I could make the Uro work for mine. Max
