This group provides a forum for owners and operators of diesel powered motorhomes and 5th wheel tractors to discuss mechanical issues, regulatory issues (US, Canada), ownership, insurance, campground accommodations, trip reports/suggestions, and other topics relevant to large RVs and the people who drive them.

This is an outstanding contribution to the Mercedes collection, probably composed about thge same time as the first auto hit the road. Sir Reginald's Marvellous Organ - YouTube

Maybe not .
I'm running the '81 240D on the low fuel light as I'd hoped to replace it's smaller fuel tank that's fungus infested with the larger one I harvested from a 1984 300CD Sunday last , the plan was : run it (the 240D) fully out of fuel then pour in the two gallons of fuel I'm carrying in the trunk , prime it and beat feet home , swap the tank out when it's near empty and therefore *much* easier / cleaner to remove .
However ~ I got home from dinner with my Son , Grand Daughter and Daughter In Law last night right at sun set so I figured I'd peer in the new (used) tank with a flashlight to see just how clean it is , there's no visible rust but I spotted a pool of old diesel fuel and fungus in the bottom , not a huge deal , it's loose out of the car so cleaning it is a simple thing .
The problem is , after peering in the sender hole I went to look down the filler neck and discovered an unleaded gasoline restrictor plate factory welded in the filler neck . I took this tank out of a super clean 1984 300CD and it clearly has DIESEL FUEL (plus fungus !
) in it so who knows what the deal is .
It's supposed to be 97* ~ 101* F plus at least muggy if not rain to day so I'm wondering if maybe I should just change the clear intake filter and go fill it up with fuel and wait a few days to run it low again as I have other works that need doing too........
Stay tuned , I'll post back what ever I decide , I think I'll go home and remove the firewall in the trunk and eyeball the 240's tank to see if it matches , if so I'll try to get it installed in the next four days , work it in around other jobs I need to get done .

Sounds like a tiring day. I changed my air filter on Mary yesterday and noticed that the canister was broken loose at all three points of the t-bar. I have spare parts from earlier PAP forays but just hate to do anything until it is 68F in the shade. Oh well, maybe Monday morning.

O.K. ;
I got up early this morning and went to look at the parts car Bill kindly hooked me up with , it turns out to be owned by a young man who's deep into the " !!! FREE FUEL FOREVER !! B.S. , he's going to part out his nasty old 300D he recently ran into the ground .
He works someplace where he gets free unfiltered , unwashed veggie oil , they bottle it from bulk and sell it , he's able to get the spillage .
The filler neck of the car was full of rust and globs of semi solid mustard looking goo ~ at first he told me he ran it straight because it's new , not waste oil but as I looked over the car and spotted the clogged clear intake screen , he claimed he filters it down to .05 Microns although there was no filtering setup anywhere in sight .
Oh well , he's young and hopefully will learn , he's recently bought another , far nicer 300D and will soon be cruising it .
The air cleaner too was dented so I headed off to walk the nearby local Pick-A-Part yards and found a pristine air cleaner on a W126 ,happily paid $35 for it then headed over to another Ecology Self Service yard that was bought up by LKQ , they're closing it down and crushing everything in it , someone needs to get the anti - trust folks to take a look here as they're also buying up auto part chain stores to corner the market .
I spotted a regular Junk yard that had Mercedes parts and stopped in , they had a nice clean 1984 300CD they sold me the fuel tank out of so now I have some good parts for both my Coupe and SWMBO's 240D ,
It's 94° F here to - day and sunny , I decided to let the old 240 run , on the flat with the AC all the way up it ran up to 80 MPH @ 1/2 throttle heated up to 90° F and was still slowly accelerating when I encountered traffic and had to slow back down again .
Whew , I'm bushed , home with SWMBO and out of a nice cold shower .

One step forward , three steps back I guess .
I got off work to - night and headed home to try and do home work on diesel throttle linkages , it was still hot & humid so I sat down , began to read and passed out .
SWMBO called me before sundown , I awoke and grabbed my tools , headed out to the street where my faithful old Mercedes 300CD awaited me in the shade , popped the hood and took off the vertical link between the injection pump and the monkey-motion madness , played with the monkey motion stuff a while and noticed there was some serious slop in it all , I lengthened the vertical rod by 10 MM or so , cleaned the ball joints (the lower one was dry , oops) lubed them and re assembled , still not what I wanted but clearly better .
Then I turned the plastic adjuster on the T.V. cable to the tranny a few times , turned it _in_ to shorten it as I disliked the down shifting @ freeway speeds .
Fed & watered my dogs (they're junkyard pups so when my hands are dirty , they get more & better belly rubs) , cleaned up and drove to see SWMBO ~ it accelerates batter now and doesn't down shift @ 60 MPH unless i give it over 1/2 throttle so I know I'm on the right track here .
It still doesn't accelerate with the WHOOSH ! like it did when I bought it and the engine and turbo were both shot , I want that back again and will pursue this until I learn the secret <magical> adjustments necessary ~ it's always in those devilish details
I follow every little thing I can find and after every one asks how come my old beat up klunkers out run everyone else
.
I can and will do this ! .
I had little trouble getting it up to 90 MPH on the I-210 freeway , it just doesn't feel right as the RPM's reach and pass 2,000 ~ that's where the turbo spools fully up and it *should* come alive .
Stay tuned , more to come .
Oh yes : the step back part : SWMBO drove the European Spec. wagon into the garage with the hatch open and bent the crap out of the TD only trim piece....
.
