Re: [diesel_mercedes] Windshield seal replacement- problems

Thanks for the advice on the windshield.

The guy at the glass shop said they'll have to take the window out, and put it back in.
He first tried to get out of it, mentioning some seals being short, yet quickly changed tone, when confronted with the seal being a MB part et al. I'll schedule a time to drop it off.

Yes Max, my wife was in a bad wreck a year or so ago, and after we bought another Volvo 240 wagon, someone ran into the back of it 4 days later. I put on a hatch from the PAP and transferred all the better parts off the smashed car.
The wife and the Volvo are doing well and staying out of trouble.

That windshield break you described a couple of weeks ago sounded very hairy. Didnt your wife have a bad crash in the Volvo a couple of years ago? Hope all that crap is in the past, life gets scary sometimes. Max

Maybe better to smash the glass and get it replaced.

Not happy about this.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Windshield seal replacement- problems

I would see if I could massage the seal/ glass into place

I pulled my window to replace the seal. When it was back in, I had to tape down the seal/ glass to hold it in place. a little heat and massaging helped.

The seal may have some memory that needs to relax. Also, it may need to be pushed into the corners

[diesel_mercedes] Windshield seal replacement- problems

Warren ;

W-123's don't use that system ~ they use a rubber grommet so they seal better and almost never crack like those cheapo glued in ones do .

All Stat Glass in Gardena , is where I get my glass , cheap .

My 220D has the same gap, though no water comes inside. Insurance companies replace glass when they get damaged - so you might be better off. And they use quality shops.
My F150 picked up a rock and the crack is growing...

That sucks Rob ;

Yes , you can re use it , no DO NOT put any silicone lubricants on it as that'll make the rubber slip off before you can install it to the body....

Guess how I learned this ? .

The order in which you assemble the parts is critical to optimum results :

Glass clean , (not at the edges with the lamination is !) invert the glass on a bit of carpet (I use an inverted trash can with carpet on it) , assemble the rubber grommet to the glass , it'll fight and slip off occasionally , keep at it .

Now , flip the glass over and gently work the trim into the groove in the rubber then add the two center joining bits , flip the whole mess over yet again and begin stuffing a 1/4" or narrower plastic covered soft & flexible wire or nylon rope deeply into the body groove in the rubber , begin at the center bottom and overlap both ends of the wire or cord at the top , all the way to each corner .

FWIW , I recently bought a brandy new M-B in the Factory bag grommet as I HATE LEAKS , I insatalled a new windshield and the joint where the mounded corners are glued , have begun to separate ~ I've been working on German Cars since the middle 1960's and never had this happen before .

It doesn't leak but I'm sure it will in time .
