[diesel_mercedes] Re: Today's project...

Cool - nice job on the cleaning! I went through the same level of detail just with the thermostat housing when I snapped one of the mounting bolts and had to drill it out. At least I knew if it held and didn't leak I should probably never have to deal with it again, save for a new thermostat in x0000 miles. (It is holding, as I finally had to put a proper Mercedes t-stat and seal in a few months ago and re-seat / re-tighten the housing)

Alas, if I do my own turbo, I won't be taking the entire housing/assembly off, so I'll have less to clean/replace.

It looks simple enough, and as long as the impellers and shafts are good, I should be able to do it in a 1/2 day (or 3 days in my case)

So where does the boost gauge sensor go? Would be pretty cool to have a turbo gauge in the dash cluster.

(like my '78 Saab 99T comes with)

RE: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Today's project...

That’s the exact process I’m doing now Barton.  Here’s the entire thing disassembled, soaked in biodiesel for a couple of days and cleaned with various brushes, scrubbies, etc.  http://picasaweb.google.com/116318077355015592300/BiodieselTurboSoak#  Instead of watching our fearless leader, I cracked a Corona and scrubbed the grime off I knew I could take care of myself.  Washington types…there’s no hope.

RE: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Today's project...

With all due respect Nate, I can tell you my turbo was leaking oil, loaded with carbon and that cannot be good for it in any manner.  The small amount of money spent on the rebuild kit is well worth it for me.  Others, maybe not.  Of course we all march to a different drummer.  I like preventative maintenance.

Kent likes to sell parts.A turbo should last 3 engines. You need boost gauge,as mine only had 6 psi.Now 16 psi.

Hey this is a cool topic and very timely for me! A few quick questions:

(Mine is 1984 300 SD Turbo - 275k mi)

1). Are there any easy/obvious "tests" to tell if my turbo is working or not working? (i.e. no turbo whine to speak of, no boost gauge)

2). How hard is it to remove/replace the turbo with engine in car?

3). What do you estimate parts cost and total repair time to be?

Thanks in advance for any help!

[diesel_mercedes] 240 D in winter

I can't believe how well my 240 auto has done this winter. We have had lots of snow and in between snow it tends to get really frozen and icy. This is the first year I have used a 2WD car in winter. Good winter car. Max
