I am not adverse to tinkering with turbocharging motors and under normal everyday use, and otherwise cautious driving, the motor would probably not blow up.
I bought a turbo volvo a couple of years ago and after I drove it off the used car dealer's lot the engine light came on...it forced me to learn about the cars and I found out that the turbo boost regulation system had been disconnected....the car had incredible acceleration since only the mechanical overboost limited pressure but I had to get it to pass the smog test so I reconnected the hoses. It made me wonder whether the HP difference in models wasn't based solely on boost ratios, since the motors otherwise appear to be identical. I am gonna install a solenoid to cut out the boost regulator when I need it. I nearly bought a 180D earlier this year and if I ever get some free time from work, I'll pull a 300D motor from a rotting SD body I have. I like the 240's simplicity but I can't live with the slow motor, so maybe I'll move the 300D motor to a 240D if I can find one. --- On Thu, 4/14/11, BStromsoe <bstromsoe@yahoo.com> wrote:

Your 2 cents is more valuable than 2 cents. He should not horse around (R&D) unless he has a lot of time, or a lot of money, or an adventurous spirit. Get a slightly used OM617 with a functioning turbo attached - they are out there. Mine was on a farm in Minnesota; body was in sad shape, but engine ran like King of the Hill. brian from la verne, ca

When I first joined the group 6-7 years ago, there were several people discussing the same issue you raise. I cannot say how it was resolved, but it has gotta be easier to transplant the motor. Personally, I'd probably try to do what you are doing but I'm unsure that the expended effort would not be in vain. There are many diesel mercs in the boneyard, or even on Craigslist having bad bodies but good motors. I bought an 84 300D that wouldn't start in the winter because it had been neglected and the valves required setting; the previous owner had inherited the car and couldn't get his price when it wouldn't start in the cool fall air. In the spring, he had it towed off to the boneyard, where I bought it for $300. So I guess my point is that you can probably find a turboed motor if you look around for less than it will cost you in time and effort to retrofit what you have with a turbo.

What do you think about cooling this engine with out oil injectors could water injection or cold air induction with inter cooler work?
Sent from my iPad Barry, Pistons for that year/model at www.Autohausaz.com run just over $100 to just under $200 each. I also shop www.peachparts.com but autohausaz is usually cheaper on most parts. I got really good prices on my daughter's VW Passat parts at www.rockauto.com May be worth a look there for MB pistons. Blaise

Sent from my iPad In the 123s, that is. The S-class models, 300SD, W116 and it's successor, the W126, were turbo'd from the start (1978).
