RE: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Doing some R&D need your help

Cold air induction with an intercooler would have little effect on piston temperature.  Water induction, on the other hand, WOULD lower combustion temperatures, but, I can't help but think it would be to the detriment of performance.  These iron-head diesels like it hot, hot, HOT!

What do you think about cooling this engine with out oil injectors could water injection or cold air induction with inter cooler work?

RE: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Doing some R&D need your help

I earlier wrote on this topic that a one-time poster here, and acknowledged MB diesel guru, known as "Stretch", installed a turbo on a four-cylinder 240D.  Indeed, one of the things he did was to machine the holes in the block to drop in the piston cooler jets.  He did that because none of the four-cylinder cars ever had a turbo, and so neither the piston coolers, and he wanted to prove a 240D could be turbocharged without sacrificing reliability, if done correctly.  I doubt he would ever have considered installing piston cooler jets into a normally aspirated five-cylinder block in order to turbo it; there're just too many turbo-engines out there for cheap that are already properly set up.

But, to answer your question:  Yes, the normally aspirated and turbo blocks have the same crankshaft journals and oiling passages, but for the piston cooling jet holes.  In fact, the journals are even shared with the 240D....

So, what's wrong with this parts engine?

The 300D engine I have would it have the same oil journals board in it as the turbo engine I have found good parts so far I have a great running engine just trying to see if I can work with what I got, or keep up the R&D I have found a parts engine I can get all the stuff I may need to turbo this running car, well good luck with your projects. I think I got the pictures posted normal size. One you can see Henry's fire truck with a water canon and both our 240's. Max

I know a little about were your coming from.
I have driving a ford power stroke for 12 years with the cost of fuel going up I'm trying to work on a project truck that can get better mileage then your average truck.
there is a company out there called gear vender they sell an over under drive that will help get the better RPM range I'm looking for.
I have seen a web page called www.shadetreeconversion they have been doing what I'm trying to do for years.
Now with all the new things you can do with a diesel engine these days.
A guy can make  great running truck. A truck that should do things that a 50.000 dollar truck can't do. For now I'm trying to see what I have and if it is worth it?
The 300D engine I have would it have the same oil journals board in it as the turbo engine I have found good parts so far I have a great running engine just trying to see if I can work with what I got, or keep up the R&D I have found a parts engine I can get all the stuff I may need to turbo this running car, well good luck with your projects. Your 2 cents is more valuable than 2 cents.  He should not horse around (R&D) unless he has a lot of time, or a lot of money, or an adventurous spirit. Get a slightly used OM617 with a functioning turbo attached - they are out there. Mine was on a farm in Minnesota; body was in sad shape, but engine ran like King of the Hill.

Let me put in my 2 cents.

When I first joined the group 6-7 years ago, there were several people discussing the same  issue you raise. I cannot say how it was resolved, but it has gotta be easier to transplant the motor. Personally, I'd probably try to do what you are doing but I'm unsure that the expended effort would not be in vain. There are many diesel mercs in the boneyard, or even on Craigslist having bad bodies but good motors. I bought an 84 300D that wouldn't start in the winter because it had been neglected and the valves required setting; the previous owner had inherited the car and couldn't get his price when it wouldn't start in the cool fall air. In the spring, he had it towed off to the boneyard, where I bought it for $300.

So I guess my point is that you can probably find a turboed motor if you look around for less than it will cost you in time and effort to retrofit what you have with a turbo.
