Re: [diesel_mercedes] Motocycle Brake Lights

And about five-years after you got your endorsement, I got mine, some 3-weeks after I got my driver's license.  By that time I had been riding for 2-years, mostly on the street.  Colorado, and especially Jefferson County, where I grew up, was a much smaller and freer place back then.  The Jeffco Sheriff deputies generally looked the other way at underage motorcycle riding, as long as you didn't do anything stupid....

(BTW, the Jeffco Sheriff's office used Moto Guzzis in the '70s, most with well over 100,000 miles on them!)

I've never been hit on a motorcycle.  In fact, I've only had one real accident on a bike, back when I was still in high school.  I was eastbound on Colfax one afternoon, when a Dodge Dart turned left in front of me.  I managed to just miss him/her, but lost control of the bike, and we went down.  I was mostly unharmed, but my '67 Honda Super Hawk (CB77) didn't fare so well.  It took a few weeks before I could scrounge all the parts needed to get her back on the road. The Dart never stopped.

I know I've been very fortunate over the past 40-years, and no amount of alert and careful riding will keep one from encounters with the worst and inattentive of drivers out there.  Hopefully, God willing, I will have many more years of riding before I get too old to kick over the old Beeser....

Please continue to get better, Nate.

[diesel_mercedes] Sigh

Many here will nod knowingly whenever I begin talking about fungus growing in the fuel of my beloved 1984 300CD Diesel Sports Coupe.......

Earlier this year I replaced the injection pump complete with one I salvaged from a badly rear ended 1985 300SD ~ that plus a set of rebuilt injectors stopped the tiny droplets of unburned Diesel fuel from blowing out my exhaust and spattering the back of the car and reduced the black/grey smoking to nil at the same time .

Since then I've never run it really hard flat out like i used to do occasionally .

I tried it the other day and discovered my old IP's governor was apparently broken as that car would top 125 MPH although I get scared over 95 ~ 100, this time it reached 105 then flat refused to go any faster .

Huh .

I'm still getting very fine silt in the paper element fuel filter I have in the fuel return hose, it went very dark in just under 300 miles and I'll prolly change it to - day or to - morrow as I need to tank up again .

The clear plastic intake screen only has a very small amount of shiny bits (steel I am sure)  in it, no chunks of fungus, that's nice .

Maybe I'm close to done with bad fuel issues, who knows ? .

Tom was following me last night and says he sees over fueling in my exhaust although I can see _zero_ smoke in the headlights of cars behind me at stops .

I don't know but be sure to use an LED bulb as they're much brighter .

Amazon has the cute little flasher things that make your current brake lights blink a few times before  staying on, illegal in California but prolly a wise thing to try .

[diesel_mercedes] Motocycle Brake Lights

Mark ;

Remember ;

In September 2007 I was astride my 2000 Kawasaki W650 (EJ650) waiting for a red light when a crazy cab behind me never even slowed down before rear ending me, that Kawi had a  nice, BIG taillight, that I checked before every ride and I had my foot lightly on the brake pedal to keep it lit......

When it's your time, it's your time .

I am skittish about tiny rear lamps on Motos in general in spite of having replaced the one on my 1994 Ural Tourist 650 with one from a 1934 Ford Sedan ~ it's not large but it's very bright and I use a larger bulb in the lower portion to not only illuminate the license tag but the ground below it too very well indeed .

I got my M1 endorsement in 1972.....

Lotta miles since then .

Well, it seems the conclusion from most of that, is that the high, center-mounted brake light was likely effective when first implemented, 30-years ago, when they were a novelty, but now that they're so commonplace, probably not so much.

I've been rear-ended twice in the last five-years.  Once in my '84 K10 (no center mounted-brake light) and once in a 2012 Ford Ranger (with center-mounted brake light).  In both cases, the car that hit me was actually pushed into me by a third car that went into the car behind me.

Most of the miles I rack up around town are on 40- 50-year old motorcycles with single, small tail/stop lights, not high-mounted or particularly bright, and I haven't had so much as a scare (from behind, anyway) in the 40-plus years I've had my motorcycle endorsement.  But, who knows.  It's possible the sand is about to run out of the hourglass....

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Transitioning this group to groups.io

Thank you for all your hard work Taran .

I'd rather  stay here because i'm on multiple yahoo groups but I'll give your new thing a go .

Hi all,

Given all the changes to Yahoo recently, I'm not sure how long they will keep running groups.yahoo.com. To avoid our group disappearing into the digital afterlife, I've set up a new version of this group at https://groups.io/g/dieselMercedes. The new group is empty right now, but read on for details...

groups.io was started by the same guy (and former boss of mine) who started Onelist, which Yahoo bought and turned into Yahoo Groups. So I think groups.io is a trustworthy service.

They offer the ability to transfer Yahoo Groups, and I'm going to take them up on this feature. This will preserve all our message archives and photos. It will *not* preserve attachments to messages. It will also transfer the member list to groups.io. As a result, you will likely receive an email from them announcing the transfer.

I don't hand out your email addresses lightly (haven't done this before). If you don't want to have your email address shared with groups.io, please unsubscribe from this group by 11:59 pm (Eastern US time) Friday, November 24, 2017. Otherwise, I will complete the transfer sometime this weekend. You can resubscribe here after this weekend and your email won't be shared with groups.io

I will leave this group up and running as long as Yahoo (or whoever owns the Yahoo name now) keeps it going. You are welcome to post here as long as you want. You can post to both/either groups. You can also leave the groups.io group if you don't like it and your membership in this Yahoo group won't be affected.

If anyone feels strongly against this move to groups.io, feel free to respond this message. Happy to hear anyone's thoughts on alternative services we could use. I don't want to maintain a bunch of different new sites, though, so if you prefer a different service, you'll have to convince many other members to agree with you :)

Happy Thanksgiving to our US members and hello to everyone outside the US!

[diesel_mercedes] C.H.M.S.L.'s 3rd Brake Light

Yes, there was exhaustive testing using taxis and the reduction of rear enders was huge .

I tend to agree.  Has there been any evidence that the high-mounted brake reduced rear-end collisions since implemented in the mid-80s?  It just smacks to me of "feel-good" legislation.  If the driver behind you is more focused on his hands or the dash, does yet another light in front of his face going to make any difference?

A noble endeavor, but  do you really think it will help protect  your rear end and that of the car's as well?   If the driver behind you isn't paying attention to what's ahead of him, an extra light might not help.  Of course it couldn't hurt.  After having the front end of my car seriously rearranged by a driver who ran a red light while texting,  I'm coming to the conclusion that the proliferation of electronic devices both hand held and on the dashboard puts everyone in greater danger.
