fuel, first time ever

My fuel gauge was also showing quarter full, and it has been pretty reliable. So, I was going home around midnight on the highway, and suddenly felt a lost of power. Pulled over, and checked the engine area, with a bad flashlight, could see nothing. She started and went about 50 yrds and stopped again, and then restarted and went 50 yrds again, then nothing, she would start and sputter. I have lots of faith in her, and so I started her again, and she went about 10 yrds. So got her towed and next morning saw that the clear filter was bone dry. Clean though, so it must mean there is no gunk in the tank.

Refilled, and took about 100 pumps to hear the fuel going into the injectors. This car is amazing. No after effects from that night that I can tell.

Still struggles on hills, and while driving in PA, have had cops follow me to see why I am going 45mph up hills, but then they pull next to me, look at the car, shrug and leave me alone. Prolly need a valve adj, etc. after almost 3 years,

Also almost put gas in her, but corrected myself at last minute.

Steering gear needs to be replaced, is leaking slowly. New one is almost 500, plus 400 for core, so found a 1985 sdl, with same gearbox, and took it out. The 3 bolts are a royal pain, but 2 hours of wd40 took them out. Can be done much easier with the wheel off, but was not an option at the junkyard.

1984 300sd, 240k plus and counting, odometer is not working,

[diesel_mercedes] Another Marathon Day W123 Gray Market 300TD

 

It's taken me over a year to pry SWMBO's '84 gray market 300TD away for service & repairs so I've been working my butt off on various things now that I have it and she's back to driving the 240D . yesterday I took the right rear seat belts all off the car, I was hoping the ruined third row belts and retractors were not wagon specific but they are, oh boy ~ now I need to find a junk wagon with the third row seat, the seats are usually worn out, the belts not so much .

Anyone finds some third row seat belts let me know and I'll go chase them down . Ca$h waiting .

Previously I'd taken the driver's side door apart to replace the failed door check and replace the pretty worn driver's side door card, I managed to break the map pocket's tab off in spite of lifting the door card _up_ , I finally found a filthy but unbroken Palomino map pocket, it has some house paint splotches on it I hope I can remove, it co$t me $40 and two hours driving time in bad traffic . The guy is scrapping out a '85 W123 Coupe so I bought a couple other small things while I was there .

This car (300TD)  had the silver button in the middle of the left gauge pod missing plus a bad dash lamp dimmer, when I could coax them to come on the dash lights were so dim as to be nearly useless so I took the binnacle off to replace the gone missing silver button, I'd assumed it would be somewhere loose inside the gauge cluster, wrong .

Luckily I had a spare left gauge and installed that, re glued the partially detached clear plastic lens with Gorilla Glue, it seems to be good stuff that only requires a tiny bit to work and sets up _really_ quickly, like in seconds so BE CAREFUL using it ! .

I replaced the old dash lamp rheostat that was full of white powdery crud with one that has a jumper wire soldered, then I carefully cleaned all the dusty bulbs and replaced a few that had visible dark stuff inside the glass ~ this is an indication that the bulb is nearing it's end of life, the Tungsten filament throws microscopic bits off as it degrades and in time makes the bulb's glass look chromed inside . now the gauges are all super bright, I can even read the odometer, a rare thing indeed .

I also removed two added on Taiwanese beepers and an added on Hella relay that apparently is a timer and causes the glow plug lamp to blink for almost one minute before shutting off, the beepers, one beeped as the glow plug lamp blinked and the other was poorly connected to the ignition switch up near where it pokes through the dashboard, I assume this is/was the key in buzzer, it never worked so I won't miss it and I dislike poorly connected and loose electrical wires, the seat belt lamp no longer lights but I don't think it was connected to the seat belts anyway ~ there are no factory wires left unused in the dashboard now .

Part way through fooling with the gauges and dash binnacle I removed the steering wheel, that makes all gauge works _much_ easier, then I decided to clean it a bit and realized the old steering wheel I took off my Coupe, is noticeably better than the one on the wagon so I cleaned that and replaced it, I'm still looking for a good used non airbag W123 / W126 steering wheel if anyone find or has one to sell .

I'm pretty sure whomever 'federalized' this car did the bodge job on the wires and also pulled the binnacle's clear cover partway off and broke the binnacle where the screws go too so I'm on the hunt for a usable W123 binnacle, I don't need the gauges but will buy any good dash binnacle . (? Brian?)

Whew, that was a long thread, the works were longer, at least I now have the middle seat belts on the passenger side cleaned and ready to re install, of course my Foster boys broke on plastic buckle so I'll try to find another seat belt and replace it but it'll work and retract faster now, hopefully before anyone can slam the door on it again  .

My work is never done but I think SWMBO will be well pleased .

More to come soon, I', off to look at another junked Coupe before going to help Tom replace the driver's side window lift in his '81 W126 .
