Re: [diesel_mercedes] Thinking of a used 2011 ML350

Thanks for the replies.

I think I'll pass on the ML-350.  Too much for my budget anyway ;-)

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Routine Tranny Service

I thought mine had a failing B2.  Flaring 3-4 shift, it was in Fourth gear by 25mph.  WOT was better. Downshifting was not a problem, it did that very well.

I did a little research on the shift points and where it should be shifting.

It took 6 1/2 turns of the Bowden adjusting nut in order to get it to shift at 4500 rpm at WOT. Now there is zero flare at any speed or any pedal pressure.I backed out the "T" adjuster on the vacuum modulator 1/2 turn. Smoother shifts.

The car feels a lot faster and much smoother.

Post adjustment. WOT. 1982 300 WOT after Bowden cable adjustment

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Thinking of a used 2011 ML350

I doubt you will find anyone on this list with personal experience like you ask. I believe Mercedes USED to make maybe the best cars on the planet, or at the least one of the very best. Nowdays??????????????? If you have the money and you really like it, well, go for it. Max

I'm looking at a 2011 diesel ML-350.  It looks amazing and has less than 25,000 miles (40,000 km) on the odometer. As you'd guess the dealer wants a premium price.

My dilemma is the wide variety of reviews both on-line and in print.  They are all over the map.  Most seem to be angry at the high cost of the new vehicle but few seem to concentrate on any particular issues with the vehicle itself.

I'm a little wary of the new diesel technology (I also have a 2006 diesel Jetta) with it's urea tank.  And the lack of a spare tire is a bit of a concern.  The fit and finish of this car seem excellent and the dealer is offering a 1 year "warranty"

Now the questions!  What is the repair record of this new breed of diesel?  The myriad of on-board electronics is mind boggling.  Is this another possible weak point for reliability issues?

Any other advice from real user experience would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Rick

Well Rick, google away. Most of us came over on the Mayflower and will probably be of as much use as a dog poper scooper with a hole in it.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Routine Tranny Service

This car uses the 722.416 tranny, only used on '85 CA models, and the
engine doesn't fit with the earlier trannys.
It also comes with the $60 air filter, as the turbo is raised to make
room for the CAT/Trap Ox.

Thanks for the offer, maybe someone else on the list needs a tranny.

It shifted just fine for the 8-ish blocks driven from the auction house to my shop. I'm not sure how many miles were on the car (245k comes to mind), but the transmission is marked in that yellow marking paint they use at salvage yards, so it had been swapped out at least once before. I'll let it go for scrape pricing, $50. I'm not sure just how to get it to the OC, though....
