[diesel_mercedes] Monrovia PAP Find

As it turned out , I couldn't wait and went by Friday afternoon as they were closing and it's still there ~ nasty paint but amazingly rust free ~ this car would have made an easy Concourse restoration .

Sadly another Metter found and cherry picked it severely but Tom and I went there early Saturday and I was able to get close to $1,000 worth of hard to find Metropolitan parts for $98. before the sun beat me up and I had to quit .

THANK YOU for mentioning it , if ever anyone sees a Metropolitan Nash for parts , please let me know as no matter how bad it is , I can get parts off it .

Hopefully Tom will write a bit about the interesting day we had there , the next vehicle over was a nice if tired 1950 Chevrolet 3100 series Advanced Design pickup truck , there was a near riot of happy campers gleefully stripping it of all the new chrome and other parts , by the time we left , little was left but the bare cab , frame and engine block sans head .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: 240D will not shut off

Congrats ! this is a nice running , amazingly economical car to run .

On the rear end of the injection pump is a round thing with a brown plastic pipe attached via a 1" or so long rubber hose ~ this hose is prolly soft and blubbery so it's easy to pill off or on , this causes vacuum leaks that prevent engine shut off .

Take this small bit of rubber hose to your local Parthaus and buy at least 2' of it and some wire cutters to trim it with if you don't have any .

Replace the short bit and connect the brown plastic tube , then look at the various plastic hoses connected near the power brake cylinder , ONE AT A TIME , replace each short bit of soft rubber hose then grab your flashlight and peer up underneath the dashboard behind the ignition switch ~ it'll have two brown plastic tubes connected by short rubber hoses, replace both and see if it now halts when you withdraw the key .

An amazing amount if things all over the car operate silently from vacuum so when these little connector bits of rubber hose get oil soaked or stiff , the resulting vacuum leaks cause myriad problems most of which are easy to fix .

Any time you can easily pull off a rubber hose , IT'S BAD and needs immediate replacement , this is why you need to begin with AT LEAST 2'
of new hose .

Be aware that all the hard plastic pipes are color coded , brown for engine shutoff , yellow for the central locking , green for the HVAC
blue for the locking seat backs on Coupes , black for filtered vacuum vents and so on .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Wiper Failures

Most of the time , this indicates the bushing on one end or t'other of the linkage has worn out then popped off ~ they typically use flat steel snap clips and these occasionally rust away .

Best bet is to take a looksee ,often it's not terribly hard to repair once you know what parts you need .

I've not yet done a W-126 so the wiper transmission access might be from under the hood , W0123's are done by removing both wiper arms then pressing in the plastic rivet centers holding on the fresh air intake grille .

I bet there's a link to the F.S.M. on the home page or , follow Brian's lead and google " Mercedes W-126 wiper linkage " and try out the various links .

There's much discussion about the proper linkage pivot lube , with metal bushings I use Motocycle Chain Lube in Foo-Foo cans , with plastic or nylon bushings I use silicone spray .

Remember to fully park the wipers before re installing the arms ! each arm is stamped " R " for Rechts and "L" for Links , DO NOT mix them up ! .

Made it out of the neighborhood and the wipers worked for about 10 wipes making a progressively louder thunk/slap sound, then the driver side stuck in place and the pax side tried to move but was stuck. Turned off the whole mess asap and went straight home. Looks like the connecting linkage between the two has failed. I'm told they are hard to find unless new from Mercedes which are sure to be way expensive. Won't know what's what until I or my shop opens it up.

This was the one thing I ran out of time to strip out of the engine donor car and I knew at the time I would want/need it all someday....too bad for me...your folklore, advice, stories - as always - welcomed...
