Re: [diesel_mercedes] 77 300D

The engine is just as durable as a 240D's. In fact, it IS a 240D, with an extra cylinder tacked on.  And, it's a little quicker than a 240D with an automatic.

It WILL have the first generation Klima automatic control system (unless it's a gray-market Euro-spec car).  If it works without leaking, great.  If it not, I suppose it's possible to spend an unGodly amount to get it going.  But, parts can still be had for cheap, and even if it needs everything, you should be able to get it fixed for under $500 (probably under $100).

More likely to be expensive is if the rubber parts of the transmission are now hard and cracking.  Check that it goes into reverse in less than a second or two, and doesn't slip in reverse.  Any indicated problems will mean a rebuild.

I am interested in a '77 300D.  5 cylinder non-turbo.  Are these good engines.  how do they compare with the 240D 4 cylinder as far as durability?

Very good , not terribly fast .

If it smokes blue , beware .

Also , if it has the vertical push button HVAC controls , be aware if the heater and AC don't work now , you're looking at well over $1,500 in making them work .
