Re: [diesel_mercedes] exhaust & turbo repair today

It spools up pretty quick now, so even around town it has much more pep, even w/ the AC on MAX. It seems like my impeller has been dragging all these years, robbing needed power.

If you don't want to rebuild yourself, Turbo City in Orange, CA will do it for you for a couple hundred bucks.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] exhaust & turbo repair today

I just had the regular turbo kit w/o impellers.
617 engine '85 300D CA. 187,000 miles (bought at 93,000)
The impellers seemed fine, no nicks or damage.
I used plenty of "Bead Blaster" and cut the head off a bolt with a grinder. I didn't get the special tool kit, though there are snap rings deep inside the turbo body that need replacing, and it was a PITA with just 2 ice pick tools. My snap ring pliers weren't long enough. If I was going to do another I'd make some tool for that.

[diesel_mercedes] RE: On returning home: Going back to R12?

You're right on target Chip ;

R-12 cools ever so much better .

To revert back you'll have to open up and flush the system of the old R134a residue and it's oil .

They make and sell simple kits for this , there's mucho labor involved but well worth the effort unless you break things in the process .

Basically , you open the inlet & outlet commections on the evaporator and condenser , connect the flusher's hose to one and begin squirtinjg the flushing agent in .

Marvel at the amount of metal chips , old oil and general funk that  comes roaring out the other end and remember I'd warned you to lay down BIG trash bags and bag the open outlet with a large , clean cloth....

Those German wool carpets wear like iron and are pretty & oh so soft when SWMBO takes her shoes off but after you've ruined them with AC spooge , they're *very* $pendy to replace .

Unless you've done so already , replace the expansion valve and of course , the receiver-dryer too , cheap insurance .

New oil in _before_ you begin re - charging it .

Seriously consider the Japanese Sanden Compressor up grade ~ if you can find it with the brackets , please let us know , I didn't save that site .

-Nate

(who's AC is blowing cold but the rate of charge drops suspiciously when I run the AC now)

      Chip Asked :

I  have made it through most the Houston summer on converted R134 AC.  But as summer draws down my AC is flagging in my 300CD coupe and AC recharge is in my future.

I am contemplating a return to the original R12 and wonder about the merits of going back.  What is involved in a rededication to the original?  Is it worth it in terms of cooling performance?

Anybody gone back homw again?

[diesel_mercedes] RE: interior door handles

You'll be pleased to find you only needs remove the arm rest then the interior door panel to do this simple job .

Best of all , the driver's (most often worn out) side one is the _very_SAME_PART_ on the rear driver's side door (the least used/worn door) making finding a *perfect* used piece a snap .

Be aware there's several Phillips screws that will be wanting the correct size screw driver , not any old worn out tip Chinese thing you have rolling 'round your tool box .

To remove the trim panel I use a GM window crank tool , it's made of 4" wide stamped sheet metal

with smooth edges and so is *perfect* to *gently* slide between the panel and your door & lever loose the plastic clips ~ once they're loose all the way 'round you'll have to flex the panel so the clips are proud of their holes whilst you slide it _straight_up_ to release the clever (= PIA German over engineered) clips holding the upper ends of the map pocket to the door proper .

If you go this far in and find only the roll pin has slipped out , use a same diameter cotter pin slid in from above , it'll work and never slip again .

-Nate

       Stan Asked :
My interior door handles have been sagging so I pulled the covers off
and found the "casting" that holds the "roll pin hinge" has cracked. It
is only a matter of time before the rest of the casting cracks do to stress.

Has anyone replaced these? Can it be done without stripping the entire
door? What are the options on parts sourcing?

Maybe start running penetrating oil in around the studs now to help loosen them. If you can reach them, give them a loosening twist now to see how many are stuck.  Bill in Oregon

Did you use the kit with the new impellers (the 200k kit) or the one without?  How much was the kit?  It's a W123 (617 engine?) that you did this to?  Also, how many miles on the engine and condition of impellers...  I'm going to be doing this job on mine soon.  My nightmare scenario includes 1) me cheaping out and buying the kit without impellers 2) finding my impellers screwed up after I open it up and 3) breaking studs off when I try to get the turbo off in the first place.  Mine's an 84 300D originally Canadian but lived in TN much of its life.  Actually I think it's mostly lived in someone's garage.  It only has 130k miles on it.

Be thankful that you don't have the '85 CA 300D w/ the CAT, as that extra part in the system, between the exhaust manifold and the turbo, allows more chance of movement of all the parts. Last week I tried to tighten up the system, and found the exhaust down pipe had sheared off, so I had that repaired, and while trying to tighten up the turbo mount, broke a bolt off in the manifold, which didn't want to come out with the usual drilling and 'easy-outs'. The shaking seemed about the same as before, yet I heard more noise from under the hood, and when I started pulling the turbo et al, I found a broken turbo bracket, and then the EGR tube, and later the end of the CAT had sheared too. When everything was pulled, I noticed many of the supports were loose. Luckily, I do have another set of parts I pulled from a parts car years ago, as well as a federal setup from Brian's old engine. Unfortunatly, the federal system won't fit w/ the '85 CA, A/C hose routes, yet if there's issues in the future I may switch out the A/C and exhaust system to the standard federal setup. Since it's all apart, it makes since to rebuild the turbo before reinstalling. Anyway, I better get out there before the heat rolls in. Rob '85 300D CA Garden Grove, CA
