Well Bud ;
100° C isn't terribly hot depending ~ if you're tooling an S Klasse along @ 85 MPH over the grapevine and it cools off to 85° C coasint down the other eisde I'd say fill it with coolant and relax .
If the temp. remains above 90° C coasting , you have a serious problem ~ I bet there's scale in the water jacket , distilled water creates rust like tap water just slower .
So , judge by the coasting temperature and either clean it more or simply put in properly mixed coolant .
I agree with Brain ~ M-B branded coolant is cheaper in the long ruin and usually easy to find in So. Cal. if you look .

I've flushed out my 1979 300SD, changed the thermosta(it was shot) and just have distilled water in it. It runs a tick over 80C around town and about 95C on the highway(up and down some slight grades-about 90C level hwy). Going up some standard grades (Newhall Pass- a few miles) it's running a tick over 100C. Before I attempt something like the Grapevine(I-5) I just wanted to run the temps by the group. I'll be putting Zerex G-05 in tomorrow. There really was no rust or scale buildup. The engine was rebuilt about 100k ago as told to me by the previous owner. Everything I've done so far has revealed that it was rebuilt. I've got a diesel VW, so I always keep an eye on the temp. Just haven't run the 300SD to know what normal is. Thanks, |

Yes ;
I always fill it with fuel additive / cleaner / purge so the injectors get a little cleaning as you bring it back to life .

Citric Acid Powder & Distilled Water works best and is recommended by Ma 'Benz .
One pound of citric acid power mixed into a couple - three gallons of distilled water then run for an hour will do a nice job in most cars .
In your FLAPS you'll find a small yellow plastic bottle of Prestone brand cooling system cleaner , this works O.K. , not as well as Citric Acid Powder but it's easier to find .
After running the cleaner / distilled water mix for an hour or better overnight then to work and of course with the heater FULL ON , you drain it , refill with fresh distilled water then run it a bit longer , drain then re fill with properly mixed coolant .
They now sell pre diluted coolant you simply pour in , no need to worry if you've gotten the correct 60/40 % mix of dilstilled water to coolant .
