[diesel_mercedes] Fun With Junk

O.K. Brian ;

The W-123 relays are on PDF file page 52 , that's very nice . I wish they hadn't left California .

So to - day after work I got busy and re installed my Uro brand HVAC fan and tried to cobble up a cigar lighter power plug for it (going to HOTazona Friday) but the test lead I have that fits the fan's plug in , was too short so back to the drawing board....

I was futzing with it and turned the ignition on and punched the control buttons a few times whilst testing the MonoValve , it slowly came to life and began blowing air out the dash vents .

I took the MonoValve apart to try another , used original one , discovered it wasn't leaking , cleaned up the good used original one and inverted the coil , assembled it and connected the wires , set it on the cowl so I could see it through the windshield and played with the temp. wheel , ignition on ~ Max. cold make the spindle jump out 13MM or so , rolling it back to Max. heat makes it retract the same amount .

This looked promising , I am told it works as a ' frequency valve ' and as you're driving along it's in almost constant motion , all i cared about was some cool air as I blister my way across the Desert so I buttoned it all back up , cleaning everything as I went along (Example: there was a blob of some gooey reddish stuff in the tiny screen,I used a new toothbrush and aerosol brake cleaner to clean it off , the screen is still reddish and not easy to look through , I may experiment later with swapping the new rubber and screen from the inoperative no brand ' kiss me quick ' spindle , if that works I'm all set for  life) .

A while back I discovered my overboost protection valve wasn't open so I by passed it and that's been bugging me ever since so as long as i had my hands grubby I removed the intake to ALDA pipe , it was broken into several pieces and patched up with rubber hose here and there , another thing I didn't like looking at so last Sunday I bought an unbroken one from a badly wrecked '83 300D sedan , got the pipe and the valve too for $5 , it was also clogged , both the valve and the plastic pipe with banjo fitting on one end so I found 4' of thin fairly stiff wire and as always , my faithful aerosol can of brake cleaner , blew it out a bit and noticed the inside of the banjo ring fitting was full of black crud , took a war surplus dental pick and scraped it out , forced the wire through the pipe a few times until I could get it in either  end (kinda tricky getting it in the banjo end) , each time I got it in I'd work it back and forth a while then withdraw it , wipe the accumulated crud off the stiff wire and blast the pipe with brake cleaner again.... slow and somewhat tedious work but in the end , knowing a thing is done right is it's own reward .

I buttoned it back up and took a test drive , the overboost valve closed up again so I by passed it in a Chevron Station and it runs fine again .

As the fuel gauge is below 1/4 tank , I took the opportunity to remove and clean out the clear plastic fuel intake screen ~ I'm about to run it out of fuel again and am not getting as much black crud in there as I used to .

here was of course , a whole lot more I did but i'm done for the night .

It's nearly 11PM , I'll get back to it to - morrow .

[diesel_mercedes] Mixing Diesel & Gasoline For Extreme Cold

I'm inside now but I *think* my W-123 manual says not to exceed 20 % RUG .

I'd tell you I'll look at it to - morrow but I have lots to do getting ready to hit the road Friday morning .

[diesel_mercedes] Basic AC Testing

Probably not Max ;

How things are supposed to be done and how they get done in a shop where any short cut that $ave$ a penny is normally accepted , why everyone hates Mechanics .

Also why I prefer to do my own work whenever I can .

For proper servicing , you need a pressure tester , I have to go search and find one to buy , I was hoping someone knew of one they'd suggest .

Interestingly , my '82 240D's original R4 compressor is still going strong ~ it takes 2 ~ 3 years before I have to re charge it with R12 , still blows nice and cold .

Anyone know where the fan relay is located ? .

Anyway , the horrific noise my Coupe started making the other day turned out to be my brandy new SANDEN AC compressor grinding itself to junk because the guy who install it muffed the job on several levels ~ he left things loose so multiple fasteners fall off as i was driving , he didn't tighten the hose connection to the back of the compressor so all the Freon leaked out and his screwed up the wiring so the compressor was running constantly even in the non AC " EC " mode , the screwed up wiring also meant the high/low pressure safety switch was BY PASSED so after the Freon was gone , the oil dribbled out bit by bit and the poor compressor ground up due to simple lack of oil.

He also damaged the body a bit and didn't install the new Condensor properly so it was rubbing on the body and one bracket was detached.....

I have much work to do , I am now looking at buying an AC vacuum pump to properly evacuate the system , maybe even a pressure pump to better test it before charging .

There's a whole lot more bad news , let your imagination run wild .

On the positive side of things , I decided  whilst I had to car up in the air I might as well replace the aging American made fractional V-Belts with proper Metric news ones , of course I got a mixed pair of alternator belts , one made in Germany , t'other made in CHINA ~ guess how well they're ' matched ' .

On they went after a very small amount of cleaning , this is the good news : in spite of the recent fuel leaks I've had , I am very pleased to see almost ZERO engine oil leaks under neath the car ! this is a happy thing as I've been replacing gaskets and grommets etc. for a while now .

The intake tract had very little oil in it , only on the bottom part , not lightly coated as is common .

I decided to replace the engine shock absorber mounts , the one below the IP was disintegrating (I have a 'photo but my computer suddenly doesn't see it)  , The Classic Center now has the kits very affordably and this includes the hardware , nice as the over sized 6 MM hole flat washersd make dandy problem solvers .

Still no HAVC =8-( , lots more other works to do .

Also, "Alldata" which is a subscription service for mechanics, has a locater section (at least it did when I used it ). My local library sys has this but we have to use it "in library only".  this shows or describes where on the car parts are. I would also ask any shops you are friendly with, if they use it.

[diesel_mercedes] Mixing Diesel & Gasoline

A couple years ago a nice lady in Texas decided to try Mercedes Diesels , she had some problems , one of which was her boyfriend filling it up with RUG and then when it began to run very poorly indeed , he insisted he'd put Diesel in it so they messed around for a month before figuring it out .

You PAID to get rid of a tank full of contaminated gasoline ?! .

Ouch , they were laughing as you drove away .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Mixing Diesel & Gasoline

somewhere I have the "tactical improvised fuels" formulas for my M35. It
shows basic mixes to approximate diesel, like (trying to remember
numbers) 30% gas to 70% 90wt. or kerosene mixes, and the like.
Probably not good as a steady diet, but workable in a "situation".
IIRC, even turpentine works, and it can be distilled from tree sap?
