No.You can add a 617 turbo diesel to body.Diesel engine has to be built with turbo in mind. --- On Tue, 6/28/11, rkitt2002 <rkitt@netscape.com> wrote:

[diesel_mercedes] Newbie question # 2
Hello All
I just bought a 1978 300D. It is in very good shape for a car that old.
I am planning on it being my daily driver.
Can I add a turbo from a later diesel? The lack of speed on hills in my biggest problem with the car.
thank you

How come Merc went to an OHC for their diesel engine? What's the advantage? bk --- On Tue, 6/28/11, beeser750@q.com <beeser750@q.com> wrote:

I was at Martin Marietta in the early '80s when the building our lab was in lost power one summer. They wheeled up a semi/flatbed rig with a generator powered by V-12 Cat. I don't remember what the rating was, but the moving base carriage we used for MMU (Manned Maneuvering Unit) training used four 480 vac motors. The old water-cooled, analogue computer that ran this thing (and, I'm sure, had less computing power than a Mac Mini) surely sucked up some amps, too. They ran that generator 24/7 for the better part of 2-weeks.

Ya got me. I have no idea how small a 4 cyl MB engine can be. The only one I have is 2.3 liters, could likely power a genset big enough for a small apartment building. 100 amp service means everything on the line can draw up to 100 amps, has near enough to nothing to do with KW/hrs. you are using. My little diesel genset is a 5kw unit, rated to put out 52 amps at full speed. There is a handy gizmo available from Amazon called a Kill-A-Watt meter, you can plug it in to a wall fixture, plug about anything you are using into the meter, it will provide real time read out of watts, amps, KW/hrs, that the device is using, depending on your menu choice. Cost about 20 bucks.. Got to confess total ignorance of RV power usage. bk --- On Mon, 6/27/11, audiolaw@aol.com <audiolaw@aol.com> wrote:

IIRC ;
These are 200D engines and yes , it'd be the *perfect* thing to put out behind the garage for emergency service , running the refri , TV & AC .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Dextron VI Valvoline. How long. in a 240D?
Slushboxes can typically be ignored for 200,000 miles as long as you keep them topped up .
Of course , when it finally slips into neutral when you're taking SWMBO or that new hot SO out for dinner or 1,000 miles from home in the rain , it's _not_ going to be a simple $200 B1 valve fix........
Any time I smell burned ATF , I change it .
This means about 1/2 the time when I buy a used car , I have to change the ATF every two or three months for a while before it stays sweet smelling .
For me , oil or ATF is always cheaper & easier than paying a Mechanic

[diesel_mercedes] Hirschmann Antenna Service
Tom came by and took my last working electric antenna Sunday so last night I decided to address this situation as I'm prepping my '80 Diesel Coupe for sale so it needs a good one . I collected my box of dead antennas & spare masts , loosened up the mast nut on one 1/2 extended one I had and powered it up , the whole bent & corroded antenna came out easily so I began by taking a spare mast , extending it then hand polishing it until it shone like new again then I used som Starting Fluid and a snorkel to wash out the accumulated grease and dirt when it was collapsed and help upside down , this flushed out a fearsome amount of black stuff , I wiped it off with a clean white rag (old T - Shirt) repeatedly as I extended & collapsed the shaft , when it finally stopped pushing out crud , I soaked a small bit of clean cloth in heavy duty silicone spray and hand lubed the entire shaft , extending & collapsing it as I went , I mounted up the motor box in the trunk & installed the cleaned & lubed shaft , it seems to work fine now . I've done this to several old Hirschmann power antennas that were visibly worn through the chrome but not bent and they all seem to work just fine , every few months when I notice it slowing down I wipe the extended mast clean & when lube it well with the Silicone and it's good to go . -Nate |
