Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re : Glow plug issues

You won't believe it (hah), but I already have 2 PAP relays in my inventory. Like a Boy Scout, I am "prepared" to do everything but an engine overhaul on the side of the road.

A few things :

Test the resistance of all five glow plugs from the relay , if they're not all very close , look harder to find out why ~ might be old / failed / defective glow plugs , might be a wire issue .

Then go grab a used glow plug relay in the junkyard , I saw a brandy new one the last time Tom and i were out walking .

I know one can take the relay apart for service and cleaning but I assume most would rather just replace it .

Hot or cold , for the absolute fastest starts , I wait for the light to go off before cranking .

I don't know ~

I don't want to bend it and find out the hard way so stay tuned ~ if they're crap like the Dealer replacement head covers , you'll soon know .

They _look_ fine and sturdy like my well worn original keys do .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Drive way job time estimate needed - W123 rear trailing arm

Depends on your ability and how much rust there is ~ I'd say a DIY job of one or two days .

I may need to do this to SWMBO's Wagon as I'm hearing clunks from the L/R trailing arm .

It's those ding-dang Government mind control rays again ! .

I took my tinfoil hat off for just a *moment* and look what happened.

Just because I'm paranoid/crazy doesn't mean they're not after me , right ? =8-) .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : New Seat Trims

Try Tom @ The Classic Center , then ask Brian who spends more time perusing the P-A-P wares than I do these days .

Navy Blue interior is nice .

I'm considering having my seats re upholstered but if/when I do I'll prolly want to replace the seat back vacuum locks and use M-B Tex too all this means yet another repair that's more than the whole car is worth .

Just use his E-Mail and send the VIN along with whatever it is you need , not cheap but cheaper than most Dealers plus they'l ship it right to your front door .

I got hard to find Palomino sun visor clips from his for one of my old M-Bs...

I had the A/C repaired the other day, and now it's nice and cold,
perfect for my trip to NoCal coming up, as well as other trips inland to
the lands of summer heat. It was out for 2yrs, and around here it'll be
nice too, especially for my wife's Scottish relatives that are coming
out here soon. What do they know about heat? The cost is best described
as "the high cost of cold air."

Yesterday, I replaced the window regulator on my LR window, and now it
moved nice and smooth. Removing the old one, I noticed the clunking was
from a few missing teeth. Not too hard to replace. My RR window is
clunking too, so off to the junkyard to see if there's a good one there.

The Turbo rebuild kit came in, yet I'll get to that later.
I also have a bunch of suspension parts for my wives Volvo, so I'll be
busy for a bit.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Glow plug issues

Just trying to get my head around this - in Mary, the glow plugs work fine and dandy 95% of the time. It is the "other 3%" that bothers me. No problems when it has been sitting for a couple of hours, or when the engine is hot. Light comes on, glow plugs heat up, and away we go. But, every now and then, when you least expect it, no light, and I have to start it via compression. Now, I have set of glow plugs laying around so it would be easy to change them out. But, that would not solve the mystery, and you know how much we like to solve mysteries.

BTW, here is another mystery. Yesterday I changed the oil and filter in Mary - and dropped one of the nuts holding down the oil filter cap. The mystery is "where do all of these dropped nuts and bolts go when they fall down into the dark recesses of the engine compartment. Maybe everything should be chromed so they are visible. But, it proved once again how important it is to order an inventory of nuts and bolts and keep them handy. Of course, once I put a new nut on the cap and moved the car, I found the old nut laying on the ground.

Hi all
Mine did this and replacing the glow plugs cured it. Does not make sense to me that the light would work intermittently but nevertheless replacing them worked. Car also started better and idled more smoothly.

So...I had been having this recurring problem of burning out the 70A fuse block on my relay every few weeks in my 1982 300CD turbo. I probably put in 8 different fuses in a 6 month period of time.

So I am still thinking it is something in the relay that does not always get power over to the glow plugs or the ignition might not be feeding power to the relay block.

I would love to have some ideas from the board about what might be going on.
