Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: 300SD overheating latest update

FWIW,I think you'd see steam coming out the exhaust if you had a hole/crack in the head.

OTOH, water injection might provide more power.

It's far more common for the head gasket to blow and allow exhaust gasses into the water jacket , especially so in iron heads .

The test is very simple , a device fitted in lieu of the radiator cap is filled with yellow liquid & the engine started , goose the throttle and if the liquid turns purple , you've got a combustion leak .

Farm/junkyard way : engine hot , remove fan belt and top up coolant to the top of the radiator neck , start the engine and tromp on the throttle ~ if you see tiny bubbles , it ain't Tony Bennet coming to visit .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re : Low power , Low Top Speed

The information you sent yesterday, about a possible air leak could very well be spot on.  We both heard a hissing when he was tinkering with it on his day off.  I haven't had time to check it out. Puppies being born all day yesterday. (I have 4 for free!)  I sent Kevin a text with your suggestion. It will be checked out this week.

Nate, I do follow your advice, our emails cross from time to time!  :)   I do appreciate any advice I get from the list!

Well Trish ;

I have tried to get you to follow specific steps to diagnose it , just changing parts willy-Nilly is often frustrating not to mention the expense .

Frustrating , isn't it ? .

When mine let go , I was tooling down a side street in Los Angeles , I smelt coolant and immediately pulled over ~ I don't like overheating ever no matter the reason .

I was able to patch it by the curb then I bought an old all metal aftermarket radiator and $pent way too much $ having it re cored but now I don't worry about coolant issues .

If you're going to buy a new radiator , I highly suggest ponying up for the NISSIN brand one , it's only a little bit more $ and is a top quality product with lifetime guarantee .

Mark made a good point ~ SWMBO's cherry 240D overheated on me way out in the middle of no where Nevada when that alloy water pump housing got a hole in it .

Take the time to properly clean your cooling system with the Citric Acid flush at least once then do bi - annual coolant changes and never worry about leaks & overheating ever again .

[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy Check '82 240D Auto AC Used

O.K. , this is the first fillup since I changed the secondary fuel filter , I took Shirley to the Dr's. office and she said it not only runs much smoother (no chugging , shaking or stalling) but she also noticed it has more power too so I guess that filter really was bad , I'll try to post up a picture of it showing the shiny clean spot where I wiped odd the sludge .

183 miles , all with AC blowing , 22.4 MPG , it had dropped below this .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Starter removal 84 300D with auto tranny.

I used a 3/8" drive knuckle so the bit had a straight shot into the bolt but my hands holding the flex handle were beside the tranny .

I was sad to see no Diesels but I don't want to chop up my bone stock " survivor " old Ranch/Farm Truck .

Truly an OM627 Turbo engine with four speed automatic tranny would make this truck really sweet but I know how to make it run near perfectly in spite of the wobbly valve guides .
