[diesel_mercedes] Re: rear suspension rebuild w126.

..today I noticed what sounds like a rear wheel bearing howling as well.

Guess I'll be puffing the hookah, and doing the whole thing.

>>>Expect a call Monday/Tuesday, Mr. Hanson..

I was hoping to avoid the expense of new springs.. Are they REALLY $400 each!?

The rest, I realize, you get what you pay for.

[diesel_mercedes] clatter noise. need a hand here.

This is weird, we left Tacoma (nr Seattle) and the following has happened.
Driving along I5 after about 50 miles we hear a clattering sound. Stop look, can find nothing, start driving again & after about 30 miles clatter again. Stop look can find no problems, go again and this repeats over and over. Put the car up on a hoist cannot find any prob. Pull into Los Banos California, pull the passenger side rear wheel, the caliper is sticking, so we replace caliper, do about 50 miles clatter again. Boots on the Passenger side 1/2 shaft are not great, exhaust system donuts are not great, car is overloaded in rear, has all our stuff for Mexico on board. The noise sounds rotational, sounds like it is near rear wheel passenger side, rotor is running cool, drive shaft and rear 1/2 shafts seem ok, no slop or end movement, hub seems ok and is not running hot.
We and four decent mechanics are stumped. We adjusted the valves and put in new glow plugs, and new injector return lines on tuesday. Car drives normally. In my life have never seen an intermittent like this, and we are afraid to cross into Mexico with a car that might shut down on the highway. We in Beaumont Ca., a little east of LA and are dazed and confused please if you have any ideas we could really use a clue.

Signed clueless in California.
TIA Tony.

[diesel_mercedes] Coil Springs

A young man I know , replaced the rear springs in his W-123 Wagon with stock springs from a .......? W-140 ? I forget but they raised it up about 1" , a good thing as he's Touring in the car and it's chock full of stuff .

If you can possibly afford it , go with new Mercedes springs (quality , ride & life) but if you're poor , try EatonSpring Co. , they're on the Internet .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Bendix vs ATE rear calipers 82 240D

No ;

Disc brakes need DOT 4 , I know the new DOT 3 is supposed to be O.K. but a Mercedes is a big , heavy missile when the brakes fail and you're rolling .

I just opened the valves on the new calipers and let them gravity feed til they dripped about a pint of fluid total, closed them, pumped the brakes, topped it off and gravity bled them one more time just enough to get a solid drip going. Probably ended up being a flush of the rear brakes. DOT 3 is good enough isn't it?
