[diesel_mercedes] Elektrikery Problems

FWIW ;

I don't ever sand nor abrade electrical connections as it forces the problem(s) to return , soon and worse .

I use METAL POLISH and you should too .

Lastly , a 70 Ampere alternator is a beautiful thing and prolly a good idea for those who live where freezing temps are routine .

[diesel_mercedes] Jumping Balky Starters

Correct ~

You simply look at the two thicker wires , grab an old paper clip and jumper those two fatter wires , she'll begin to crank and roar into life in a moment .

FWIW , any time you turn the key to the  ' start ' position and there's a momentary delay before anything occurs , the starter solenoid is dying and if you (Like someone here ahem)  ignore this warning signal , you can expect $ome $eriou$ wallet drain and getting stuck some where it flat refuses to crank....

It'll also chew up your ignition switch and the wiring harness .

The _ONLY_ acceptable brands of NEW (only) solenoids are BOSCH and ECHLIN (sold my NAPA) , all others _will_ do you dirt and ' rebuilt ' starter solenoids are worthless .

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Maybe sell our '81 300D, clean California car, now stored in Houston TX

Doug ;

If it's really clean and shiny inside & out , tell them $6K and see what happens .

The worst they can do is buy it.....

There are lots of interesting History Stories about Germans who came to Texas for the good life , glad to know they're still there and enjoying it .

Hate to sell it, has been the best of cars for the past six years at our lake home in Central Texas, wonderful for bombing around the Texas Hill Country, where especially the local German Texans always ask if its for sale. I get notes on my windshield asking to buy it. Its a clean, no dents, rust, or wreck damage, so its a nice buy for someone.
Problem is, I don't have a clue what to ask for it. Great miles per gallon since its Non Turbo, an four speed automatic. Drove it in a parade in Brenham Texas with the sun roof open, got lots of nice comments then too.
We are moving into a Seniors Apartment, an will hate to park it outside, in the weather, no doubt will end up with parking lots dents, especially in a Seniors parking area.
Any suggestions from the group, I have been here for years, mostly just a lurker, but learned a lot from you guys an gals.

[diesel_mercedes] Cheapo RED L.E.D. Charging Tester

Understood Bobby ;

It'd be really nice next to the mirror or something where a glance would tell you what's what at any moment .

When I find & post it , you'll see why it's wretchedly cheap .

All it does is give you the volts DC at the plug .

The Innova ones show you the battery's charge in a bar scale and volts DC plus the alternator's output in a bar scale and three colored LED's .

Choose the one you prefer .

If you don't keep after me about it , it'll surely slip my alleged mind .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Cheapo RED L.E.D. Charging Tester

Max,

Unless you buy a couple of meters, I wouldn't cut the plug off.  Several of the reviewers comment that they like being able to move the meter to other cars to diagnose problems.

We may have to buy the Innova and a cigarette lighter extension cord.  Then we can have the best of both worlds.

But I'm still holding out for the red one on a cord - if it looks as good as the Innova.

Why is the corded one the chepo crapo? They all look like cheap Chinese junk. But if it works. Those plugs (cigarette plug) are problematic at best, not to mention sticking out to get bumped or banged. Just wondering? max

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Maybe sell our '81 300D, clean California car, now stored in Houston TX

HI Doug.
Well, good luck on this next move in your lives, and thank you for your
service!

Your car sounds a real peach.
Pricing is always difficult, and regional, in my opinion.
It'd also depend on how fast you want to sell it.

People tend to want the turbo model, but I'm sure plenty like the NA as
well.

I'm in northern CA, where cars don't really rust out much, and so are
often sought. Not sure about Texas, that way. But know cars from the
Midwest and even east tend to be "rusty", or get that way.

All that said, I'd place a price range of 2 to 5 thousand.
But, again, I don't know the market in Texas.

good luck

Henry

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Alternator out and tested good...now what?

I think this is a good example of Ohm's Law.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohm%27s_law If resistance goes up(loose connection) voltage and amps go down.  The logical product is heat at the point of highest resistance.  That is why a bad connection can "BURN".  This happens on electric cars.  A battery post in a series string of batteries can melt if not tight.  It may also express itself under load and not under light load.  This was my problem.  It was fine in the daytime but at night when the alternator was asked to put more amps out the problem arose.  I'm surprised the starter didn't have a problem.  Lawrence Rhodes
