This group provides a forum for owners and operators of diesel powered motorhomes and 5th wheel tractors to discuss mechanical issues, regulatory issues (US, Canada), ownership, insurance, campground accommodations, trip reports/suggestions, and other topics relevant to large RVs and the people who drive them.
Here is how auto factories ought to be set up in cities.

Some of you will recall the mysterious (and very loud) "whang, bang, & clang" noise coming from Mary, my 1983 w123. The noise only appeared when going up a 6% grade for a 15-30 minute time frame (Las Vegas grade and San Marcos grade). Once back on flat ground, no problemo, and so I tended to forget about it while I wandered.
I think the problem is solved. Replacement of the right rear axle may have done the trick. In watching a mercedesource video re axles Kent described play in the joint of a bad axle (caused by boot failure and loss of grease). Well, I put thousands of miles on the axle on flat land, but it always was in my mind that on a grade, perhaps I was getting enough separation a bad joint to sound like a machine shop.
So, new axle two weeks ago, and then up in the mountains over the weekend (even had to use first gear with kickdown at some points). No noise like Thor banging on his anvil. Final test comes on Wednesday when I head for Las Vegas to test my theory, and put the final nail in the coffin of the mysterious noise.
