After a three year search, we finally have a nice R107 380SL arriving at the shop this week. This is one well worth fixing as you will learn in the upcoming Youtube video series. It will be a classic example of a clean rolling restoration, and you know how I love "rolling restorations." ( one that you can keep driving as you restore it over time.)

We did bring a blue 450SL home last month that was smashed in the front.. We considered this one for about a week with the idea I could teach Joel some body work. After looking the car over closely, we discovered it was hit a lot harder than we were led to believe. We decided to name it "Crunchie."  I am sure some of you will think we should have saved this one too. All things a fixable, but not all things should be fixed when you consider the time and money required.

So the long awaited video manuals and repair kits for the R107 will begin in February. :-)

I have been doing a lot of brake work in the shop lately on my own cars.. Piper ( 1981 300TD wagon ) just got an all new brake system including new Zimmerman Rotors, new ( not rebuilt) ATE calipers, new Brembo brake pads as well as new flexible brake hose.  Zimmerman and Brembo make a super combination. If you have never installed Zimmerman rotors you must try them . The quality of these German made rotors is beyond belief. Watch the 4 minute unlisted (customer viewing only) YouTube video to see why I think these are the best:

BRAKE PARTS SALE BEGINNING FEB. 1: This sale is being announced to our customers first. A YouTube announcement will not be made until the second week in February. I only have a limited stock of new ATE calipers, new Zimmerman Rotors and Brembo pads. Many other brake related items will be on sale. Most of the items should be posted by January 30 (sneak peak). I already have some new ATE calipers ( not rebuilds ) posted… :-)

CLICK HERE TO VIEW all sale items: https://mercedessource.com/ store/search?onsale[0]=1

I just love the Mercedes "braking feel," especially when all the parts are new. So that is why Piper (my 1981 300TD wagon) got the full treatment!

Safe motoring always,  Kent Bergsma

[diesel_mercedes] LKQ

LKQ also sells bottom quality Chinese body parts, I imagine that's what the big red trucks are carrying .

For  a while they advertised ' we'll remove the parts for you !' but I've not seen that for  a while and no way am I going to trust the judgement of some yard ape to a random used parts good condition .

I worked on my wagon a while, got the European KM speedo I got from Russia and had rebuilt installed, of course it turned out the gauge binnacle was all broken up inside where the screws go, luckily I'd bought a couple dash & gauge assemblies so I spent some time mixing and matching parts, gauges, little tiny "Just So" screws and so on, got my Mityvac vacuum tester out and tested two of the four under dash HVAC vacuum elements accessible  with the binnacle out, they're O.K. so I cleaned the dust off the various bulbs and re assembled it all, I think every thing works now, I'll have to check the blue high beam indicator after it's dark .

The KM speedo goes to 200 KMH, wow, that sounds and looks impressive, more so than it actually is .

I tested the central locking and discovered the tail gate's vacuum chamber leaks, capped it off and will try to source a new one from the M-B Classic Center in Irvine, Ca., they've been very good at finding me obscure little parts for these 35 year old cars .

For now the doors all lock at the same time, not the hatch though .

I got a new under hood insulation pad with foil heat shield for the turbo charger, there's still a fair bit of old foam from the original pad clinging to the under side of the hood, I've been trying to get it off and to - day washed the entire under side of the hood with purple industrial de greaser, that's nice but it didn't touch the old foam bits , I tried a really stiff bristle brush, no joy so I dug out my hard plastic scraper and had at it, this is pretty good but it's slow going ~ I don't want to scrape the paint at all .

In time my mangled shoulder hurt so much I quit and closed the hood, mixed up a bucket of soap and washed & dried the whole car, put up my tools and sat down & passed out until my brother showed up and woke me up .

For a while at the Auto Jumbles I'd see car antennas made in the shape of women, kinda tacky but prolly much fun for a farm boy....

Thank you gents for the junk yard refresher. As I have had no need to be in a junk yard for many years, I forgot about them reimbursing the admission fee if you bought something.

As far as LKQ Corp. being an auto recycler, I did not know that. I have seen their trucks on the road for many years. I had no idea that was what their box trucks delivered.

And now your moniker Inner City Anti-Theft Appearance Group makes sense Nate. Thanks for clearing that up.

And coat hangers for radio antennas? Wow, I had forgotten about that. Certainly do not see metal radio antennas these days or lack thereof.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Factory Radios

Yes ;

Many do not know that Ford bought Mazda lock stock and barrel in 1967.....

I looked in a few of those, none still had any radios .

Give me time....

[diesel_mercedes] Topic Drift, DELETE Not Complain !

Good morning Mark ;

Yes, I bought a nice 2001 Ford Ranger XL (base stripper model with rubber mats and so on) .

No nothing, just the radio with DC player for a 1995 ~ 2011 model, it's made in Brazil and only fits the Rangers...

I didn't mean to bore everyone with my truck tales, it's of course random and convoluted, ask and I'll share it here .

Whaaaa...?  You have a Ford Ranger?!  Is it diesel-powered or does it have a Stove-bolt? Or 292?

[diesel_mercedes] Factory Radios

Interesting Bill ;

The removable face plate is what I'm working to avoid ~ these trucks didn't have that option .

The face is large and rectangular, about 4" in it drops to maybe 3" tall as it's not fancy in any way .

Once I find one I'll snap a picture of it, you'll be surprised but that how they sell : the sizzle. not the actual steak .
The fascia I referred to contains the HVAC controls, all dials . it surrounds the radio's face .

                   Bill  wrote:

Our 2003 Focus had one of those as well. You could take the face plate
off and take it with you. If you lost it, a replacement face-plate would
fit but not work without Ford's participation in reprogramming it.

So ;

I was out junkyarding to - day, looking for a right side middle seat seat belts for my old Mercedes Diesel Station wagon, it turns out it only fits W123 wagons dammit . (I think I have one inbound now from New York, whew) .

As long as I was looking around a HUGE self service yard I decided to look at the trucks and found several Ford Rangers, apparently they're all the same from 1995 ~ 2011 .

Several had aftermarket CD players, I want the correct plain wrap factory one, it's made in Brazil and part of the "Inner City Anti-Theft Appearance Group" that most here are un aware of....

After a while I realized there are loads and loads of Ford Explorers, this is supposed to be built on the same platform and Lo ! many had the identical dash boards and several had factory CD players..... .

I gently and carefully removed one, yes ! it uses the same harness plug .

Just to be sure before paying I carried it over to the same 2001 Ranger I have and tried fitting it to the fascia.....

Uh, oh ~ no dice .

The Explorer's CD player has about 1/8" wider and taller face so it won't fit in the Ranger's fascia.... .

Oh, well, I'll keep looking .

In another Ranger I discovered a *perfect* undamaged shift lever with knob and rubber boot, left behind by whomever removed the engine and tranny

More than 1/2 of these trucks had detached shift knobs and it's part of the whole shift lever .

I'm a regular at quite a few self service yards and they're always telling me '! you buy the strangest stuff no one else ever wants!' then they give me a discount....

$16.00 including tax ? YES PLEASE .

Back to work on the wagon to - morrow .

[diesel_mercedes] The Self Serve Junkyard Experience

Yes, you never really know what you'll find, I used to go just to get exercise, now they have a pretty good OnLine web site that lists everything in the yard, when it was dropped in the rows and it's _exact_ location so you don't waste a lot of time .

They buy from insurance companies, tow yards, police impounds and of course, take that old jalopy you no longer want ~ I'm amazed at the daily parade of what I consider good used cars driving up to be sold for $200 or so, I guess life is so uncertain these days that many do not want to bother trying to sell to strangers ~ you to to LKQ, they look at it and your paper work and cut you a tiny check....

Most of the LKQ yards no longer offer to sell vehicles, a shame really .

Pick and Pull here in Vancouver is a dollar per visit.

With certain vehicles and parts, it may take months of visits to score.
They do have several local locations

which can be researched online. Sometimes they seem to be the 'only'
source, so I am inclined to try them.

[diesel_mercedes] Sunday

The entrance fee was raised a few years ago to $3, about the same time, the parent company LKQ Corp. reduced the operating hours and raised the prices on the wildly popular discount days, usually during holiday weekends, they used to have 50 % off sales , now they're mostly 40% off and occasionally only 30% .

In 2019 they changed the popular 'Monday Madness' sale of $7 for any steel wheel and tire to only the tire, not a friendly thing to do and not that much more profit for them as many would buy oddball old wheels with junk tires, junk steel wheels are supposed to be treated as hazardous waste just like tires but they're not .

Wheels have a painfully small scrap value, less than one dollar each .

I came up with the Inner City Anti-Theft Appearance Group moniker because I saw so many metal coat hangers doing duty on beaters and I'd get asked "when are you going to replace that ?" ~ the answer was : when I'm ready to sell the car as it used to be a thing to randomly snap the antennas off parked cars for no reason.....

I always try to inject humor into things, God knows the daily grind can be pretty depressing at times .

LKQ refunds the $3 entrance fee if you buy anything .

I tried to buy hardware and other tiny little bits but they were always hostile to my handful of hardware or bulb sockets etc. so I stopped asking and just take the little things that otherwise would b swept up and discarded .

LKQ is only partially in the used auto parts business : their main profit comes from the raw scrap metal, including the alloy wheels that now are more plentiful than steel wheels .

I think to - day I'll work on the car in the driveway until I get tired and quit while I'm ahead, I had a lot of shoulder / arm pain last night after the Ibuprofen wore off in the wee hours of the night .

Prolly take to - morrow off and spend it with my Sweet, take her to breakfast, wash my work clothes and so on .

There's a local Mercedes car club meeting this coming Saturday and I'd like to drive the wagon, we'll see if the new / used seat belt arrives and gets cleaned up in time to install it .

Nate,

I have not been to a self service yard in years. What is the cover charge these days for admittance?

Is this for real or a bit of tongue in cheek?:
 "Inner City Anti-Theft Appearance Group"

I was not sure.

I just went through the throes of finding the correct player for my wife's 2000 Explorer. It's only got about 70,000 miles on it and it was a Denver car, straight, NO rust. If you are having difficulties finding one, I think I can help you with part numbers if you give me particulars. Year, sub model, premium or standard sound, with or without rear controls, steering wheel controls. I just went through finding one.

No, they are NOT the same, as you are beginning to discover.
