No it was not. That could be it. The glow plugs should be on, plus someone else with their foot on the throttle halfway down.

[diesel_mercedes] Re : W-123 Starter Connector Box
O.K. , it's an '82 so the throttle has the manual idle speed knob , turn it counter clockwise as far as it'll go then try again and hopefully it'll light off as you said the starter is working and the engine cranking...
If it's cool out , you should still turn the key on to hear the glow plugs .
The starter should work with just an unbent paperclip but if not , use the needle nose pliers .
Am I missing something here ? .

[diesel_mercedes] cutting off air flow to intake to shutoff engine
I was going through the procedure for changing the vacuum shutoff valve on diesel-giant. They say that to prevent runaway diesel, take off the air pipe from the turbo to the intake, and put a spraycan cap on it to cutoff air to the intake to shutoff the engine. The cap supposedly fits perfectly on the intake inlet. I tried four caps, they all fit well, but only one worked. That one I am saving! The others were prolly leaking air somewhere into the intake.
Point being, I guess, to try a cap and see if it actually fits and works, before you have to use it in an emergency.

[diesel_mercedes] Re : 300SD starting problem after sitting 2 hrs
Begin by replacing any fuel hoses that are either showing cracks or that show fractional size markings as there's almost certainly an air leak in the underhood plumbing .
Unless you've done so already , I'd go ahead and change them all , there's not a whole lot to the job , it's just messy , like hand priming .
Be sure to buy at least 12" more hose that you can possibly use ~ you'll be pleased to discover you don't run out right at the end of the job .
Take the time to hunt down the correct hose clamps too as they do make a big difference and they're only $1 each .
Expect to have to re - prime it then hold the engine at a high idle for 5 minutes after changing out the hoses as it takes time to self bleed out _all_ the air bubbles , I learned this the hard way after revving it a bit then leaving it to idle for long enough to wash my hand , then I made it to the corner before it stalled out from air bubbles reaching the injectors =8-^ .

Yep ;
There are three wires , two big red ones (1.5MM) and one black one , jumper the two red ones .
Of course you first made sure the tranny was is park and the E-Brake is firmly set because the engine will crank and start causing the car to lurch forward & run over your toes if you leave it in gear...

[diesel_mercedes] Fungus Cleaning
Hi Michael ;
Yes but , this wasn't injector cleaning , it was to rid my system of fungus crud .
For routine injector / injection pump cleaning Seafoam is the very best there is and Techron is good stuff too .
For fungus Startron beats all other treaments hands down , I hope you'll never have to try it but if you get fungus , give it a try and you'll see .
I am happy to report that since blowing out the intake screen , no further chunks have appeared , the Startron seems to be working as the fuel remains almost clear , this weekend we'll hit the road and run through a tank or three , since I have a bottle of Startron in the trunk , I'll be dosing it with each fillup .

I use Chevron Textron or Seafoam to clean the injectors and fuel system. Works great.
