Re: [diesel_mercedes] Speedometer cable

OK then I need the one for the actual car, which is '81 300D.

The motor is the '80 300SD.

That explains why I had trouble finding it online!

Thank you very much for your help Tom!

Searching for a speedometer cable for my '81 300SD.

Rock Auto price is close to $80!
Ecklers:  $48.99
O'Reilly: $7.99...something is wrong with this picture!

Can't find it on the Autohaus site...gonna give them a call and find out where they hide them.  They usually have the best price and ship fast.

I really wanted to get it local, hate driving without it.  Only parts stores around me are Napa, Auto Zone & O'Reilly.  Not a lot of choices.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Driving Lights on a W126

I think anything MB related would be invited on this forum. Yes, you could probably call these "foglights" by today's standards. But I think if you put a pair of 100 watt bulbs in them you would accomplish the same thing. Mentioning the difference on the coupe and sedan front end, you can actually put a coupe front clip on a sedan. You have to change the core support too. You don't need to change the fenders. I've seen this conversion and it looks awesome.

Mr. Hanson:

Thanks for the tip. With its entirely different grill and lights, it never occured to me a coupe's bumper would fit on a sedan. That said, are the lights in a C126's bumper fogs or driving lights? I'd prefer to have light thrown like long pencils down the road rather than the more nebulous cast of a fog light. If they're fogs, do you suppose driving lights could be installed in their place? I'd appreciate your thoughts.

To others concerned about the volume of posts to this forum, I post rarely, but please let me know if I've strayed off the core diesel topic. Should matters be restricted to troubleshooting compression ignition and fuel injection?

My own view is that I'm not bothered by questions about ignition locks, window winders, mpg checks, or occasional travelogues tangentially involving a diesel. The recent, seemingly infinite thread "They Lied!!!" did try my patience, though. I solved that with the delete key on my PC. All in all, I like the variety because I pick up something new of a mechanical nature from time to time.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Electric Window Service

Nate, I held the up button in for a bit too long, (was thinking about gorgeous women I guess) and the damn thing busted, I can hear the motor & it is clicking so probably a gear or cam not engaging. Will try and rip it apart next week and see what is up. Worried that I cannot get the liner to look right after my fat fingers have done their thing.

There also is a Becker repair shop in New Jersey (google it) that will sell you a known repaired & functional Becker, or repair yours. Look them up and give them a call - that way you are not buying a pig in the poke.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] PAPS in Houston?

I haven't been to Houston for nearly 50-years (when my father took his then 4-year old son on the bus down to pick up our new 1964 Peugeot 404 wagon at the port of Galvaston), but, going to LKQcorp.com and putting "77038" into the zip code search window turned up several locations in the immediate Houston area.  I see there are also a few around Beaumont.

There is also this:  http://houstonpickapart.com/houston.html

I'm sure there are others.

You just hafta get out there, and visit these guys maybe once a week or so.  Ask around for locations of other yards.  I can't imagine a city like Houston wouldn't have several cars available at any given time.  My guess is the situation isn't much different than it is in LA, but, I dunno....

And don't forget craigslist, a good resource for people who are selling parts from their driveways and backyards, if you can avoid the temptation to resurrect whole cars....

That's called a " Pillow Block " Chip .

When Tom and I passed through Houston after KATRINA , we found plenty of Junkyards full of older cars but they refused us entry to look for things and of course , they had NO IDEA what all they had in there , NO ONE can keep track of everything .

P-A-P doesn't check them , it's strictly Pig In A Poke , As I have 40 years experience with the terrific quality of German radios , even the cheapo ones) I just pony up the $20 and take my chances , clean 'em up and swap face plates when that turns up bad .

So far I've not bothered to repair the cassette part because one of these days I plan to copy all my old cassettes over to CD's .

I imagine you'd be best advised to send your Becker out for proper service if you want the tape deck portion to work again , they'll have the correct drive belts and Krytox Grease that won't eventually creep onto the tape capstains etc.

Nate R. knows a good place to send it .

What's the specific complaint ? .

I've found quite a few that just loosened up the various 6MM fasteners , I either snugged 'em up or , in some cases where the loose threads had damaged the holes in the sheet metal door skins , I added oversize 6MM flat washers to gusset the metal and all was well .
