To - day I decided to replace my shattered AC condenser fan , the new one looks very nice indeed and has all the same holes *but* said holes are not threaded like the original fan's frame was so I looked around in my piles O' junk as I'm always grabbing what I call " Problem Solvers ": various useful hardwares like over size washers , nuts screws and bolts with attached washers or casted in flared heads , all these are *very* handy when faced with a cracked bit of sheet metal or an egged out hole , things like that .
To - day's life saver were three 5MM self tapping screws with 8MM ATF heads and flared washers casted as part of the screw ~ these are found on W-123 & W-126 chassis cars , holding the remote coolant tanks to the body .
The new fan is supposed to use the old screen guard so you don't loose any fingers but I decided to leave it off to reduce fan noise and increase efficiency , remind me of this when I come crying in mid Summer missing a few fingers .
The new fan is German made and even has balancing clips on the blades ~ pretty spiffy .
The condenser is still badly bent but I don't see any leaks so I buttoned it up to see if I still have AC , it's been 85 + ° F here in the last week .
Sadly I was still damp from my shower after installing the new fan, I'll check it soon .
The fan comes with a super long (2' +) pigtail and two pin connector so I cut the one off the old junk fan and will make some sort of electrical testing harness out of it soon .
The plastic female plug (car side) was broken and gone so I carefully removed the plastic part off an old auxiliary water pump I'd saved some years ago , mounted it to the loose female connectors making sure the color codes matched side to side and now no worries about shorting out when the fan comes on .
I did take a couple pictures and will post them up ere long .
Maybe I can begin rebuilding the grille to - morrow afternoon ~ I bought a new URO grille just to get the plastic and aluminum strips , the last one I bought had terrible quality chrome surround so I just cleaned up a cheap , *perfect* original one from the junkyard and loaded it with the new plastic & aluminum , using the original hardware and clips etc. , etc. so it actually _works_ not like if you try to use the whole new grille .
It looked like my two vintage Grille Badges will be saveable , bent but still O.K. .
