I have an 85 300SD with about 120K on it, paid around $1,500 for it.  It needed some interior work and I just had some drive train work done as well.

I look at it like this:  any car I would buy new will cost me at least $300 a month to buy for about 5 years, plus added insurance for comprehensive because it's on a lien. So, if I spend maybe a few thousand each year for a project, in about three years I will have a pristine car that everyone talks about.  My sweetheart drives it to the casino and the valet guys DROOL over it.....she says they all do it every time......  so we must have good taste, right?

Let's face it, we are a very unique group that appreciates the fine quality of these cars....

My friend that let me take his car off his hands knew I would love it, and I swear when I drive I laugh once the hum of the turbo kicks in and it just floats on at 65 to 70 MPH.......

I LOVE my car!

As *IF* I would keep you folks secret! I've been telling him to join since I did...and I think he keeps getting hung up on the yahoo thing.

They bought the wagon in the spring for $4k, have put $3k into it (rear axles, valve adjustment, mounts, compression test, glow plugs and probably other stuff). He's trying to get the biodiesel business off the ground, and now they have a baby on the way. He's just fed up. But his fiance (my good friend) is picking up where he left off so we can get to work ;) So you might see her here before him, lol.

[diesel_mercedes] windshield wiper pump gasket & passenger side wideangle mirror.

 

I've bled out all my wiper fluid out past the washer pump so I need a new o ring/ gasket. Found it at Autohaus AZ for 86 cents  It's rubber.  My passenger mirror is gone but the guts remain.  Expensive. Anyway of rebuilding with a wide angle mirror?  Seems there are some proprietary connections.  Might another year fit the W123?  I noticed the shapes are similar.  I like having wide angle on my passenger mirror.  If I had a broken mirror I could take off the parts and attach a wide angle mirror.  Lawrence Rhodes....

I *always* listen to you, Nate :) I did the purge and the hot oil and filter change...though I didn't get the car until October ;)

Valve adjustment was waiting...for tools, money for tools, manual...and for me to even learn what a camshaft lobe was. Now I'm ready, the manual is here in shiny gold xmas wrap (gift from my sis), will have xmas money for tools to either turn engine at the crankshaft OR the PS pulley nut.

AND...once this cold & snow snap ends, I can still do it in probably 40ish weather.

I wish I could. But I didn't even have money for rent this month...just a crazy 2 months financially...things are (slowly) on the upswing...but $20-$30 in tools and standing out in the cold for hours is more likely than $98/hr for my favorite mechanic.

[diesel_mercedes] BEWARE the Cheap Mercedes !

 

That being said lets look at what it might cost.  2k for a used transmission.  3k for a used engine installation.  Another 2 grand for front end work.  Even after that it's still cheaper than buying a new car & I guarantee you will keep fixing it.  But in the end you will have a durable, dependable, easy to fix car that will last long after the new car you didn't have to drive is retired & you can run the Mercedes diesel on waste vegetable oil.  Try that on a Honda Fit.  Looking on these cars as parts cows will thin the herd as no more are being made.  Lets hope all the ones at pick and pull are totaled by having their bodies smashed and not totaled by some pencil pusher.  Lawrence Rhodes...

I have an '85 300D. You'll enjoy the higher geared differential. With the '85, check where the air cleaner is, as the CA models have a particle filter (TrapOx) which takes up the space where the standard air filter goes, above the manifolds, so the air filter is moved to the front corner behind the headlights. If it is a CA model, there's other issues to consider, like if the TrapOx has been replaced (recalled).

I'd check through the service records to see what maintenance has been done, and this also shows mileage history.
If the miles are that low, the driver's seat should be close to perfect, and all the little knobs and switches should be in great visual shape, due to lack of use. For that price, make sure the AC works well, and how about the cruise control?

Nate is right, Carfax and an inspection is a good idea.

remember regardless of mileage rubber rots,check flex disks for cracks,brake lines,check plastic like radiators.Replace if bad and you have a nice family car.
