Not a problem. I'll put them on EBAY after the holiday madness subsides.  Merry Christmas and a Happy and prosperous New Year to you.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Help picking out a diesel w123 or w124 for daily commuter

Watch out for rust though.  I am selling my 85 300TD because of rust.  Maybe the later generations have improved rust prevention.

You'll get a lot of varied opinions on this topic. The W123 series turbodiesels are generally bulletproof if properly maintained. I'd tend to stay away from a CA-version 1985 because of the particle trap and smaller transmission. When the later generation diesels came around in 1986 they were quieter, got better fuel economy, had a lot more power, less routine maintenance (no valve adjustments, etc) and were generally more refined. Better chassis design. The 1987 300D Turbo is a 6-cylinder and is a pleasure to drive. If you can find good examples of these cars that haven't been ruined with a bunch of cheap aftermarket parts, they will give you many years of great service. The 5-cylinder 2.5 Turbo you mentioned will also do well.

Hi Folks -- Looking forward to your help. Here is my situation. I am currently driving a 2003 Honda Element with 125k. I am looking to acquire either a w123 300d Turbo or w124 300d 2.5 turbo diesel to become my daily commuter to and from work. My Honda has been slowly having more problem and now the exhaust manifold has a crack and is leaking. The desire for the diesel mercedes is twofold -- one for a reliable daily commuter and two for an engine where I can learn basic mechanical work on an engine that is approachable (with a good online community, parts available and training videos). I plan on phasing my Honda out while phasing the Mercedes in. This was one of the cars I was looking at:http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/3487746380.htmlI did test drive someone's 1985 300d turbo, but the condition was a bit rough and there was some rust (I know to stay away if I see any rust. Anyways, I don't really know where to start -- only that I am gravitating towards one of these 300d models. Any advice or help would be much appreciated.

[diesel_mercedes] So Long Phil

In Memoriam...
Phil
Phil Reinhardt 1951-2012

Late last month, the automotive community lost a beloved member...

It is with a sad heart that we announce that Phil Reinhardt passed away on Wednesday, November 28, 2012, his birthday, from a heart attack. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Reinhardt Family at this time.

Phil had just turned 61 - He was an outstanding team member, a pleasure to work with, an invaluable source of knowledge and most importantly, a true, genuine human being that went the extra mile for his customers, family and even strangers. He is irreplaceable.

The following is an excerpt from Phil's family:

Hello friends and family of Phil. I should probably just call everyone family because that is how our dad saw everyone. He was that amazing guy who would do anything for anybody who asked, gave selflessly of his time and money and hardly ever thought about himself. He loved Jesus, his family, loved to cook and would make huge meals to feed people, he would host karaoke, which was a passion of his, he loved cars and car parts and made it a life's work and dedication.

Our dad was the most amazing man we have ever known and the loss of him has hit us hard. My dad passed away suddenly of a heart attack on Wednesday, November 28th which was also his 61st birthday. He loved life and lived it fiercely. One of my dad's favorite quotes was this, "...the purpose of life's journey is not to arrive at the grave with a well-preserved body, but rather to slide in sideways, completely used up, yelling and screaming, what a ride!" This quote represents our dad well. Phil would give everything he owned, which wasn't much, to anyone who would ask.

My dad loved to rock his Hawaiian shirts and favorite cowboy hat. He spoke with much joy and affection about all of the people he got to talk with everyday through his job with Pelican Parts. He loved people!

My husband James has an introverted personality and he would marvel at my dad...how he made friends everywhere he went. We were in California at a dinner and western show event with him one year. He wandered off and we were trying to find him in the crowd of people. We finally found him off talking to a group of people. We stood there in awe as he easily joked and bantered with these strangers who, from an outside perspective, looked like long lost family. This couple on their honeymoon gave him their contact information so they could keep in touch. That was after a 20 minute conversation! What a gift he had, what a lover of people! He was the most non-judgmental, kind and loving man that has graced my life. Thank you everyone for caring for him and letting him touch your lives!

He was very excited about moving back to California and joining us here on our home turf. He will be greatly missed here at Pelican Parts.

Thank you for your understanding and support,

The Pelican Parts Team

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Help picking out a diesel w123 or w124 for daily commuter

That makes me paranoid as well -- I would think that this is a perfect car for the teenage son as well. And less hassle for the dad, certainly than buying a new car, selling this one, going to the DMV, getting insurance, getting plates, etc.

It does seem a bit off…

    Maybe I'm just too paranoid.

The early 90s, if I recall, were part of the time when Mercedes was having some quality control issues, from spreading manpower too thin while trying to resurrect Chrysler.

Any Mercedes is a marvel of engineering, and probably workable for anyone with basic mechanical knowledge.  But if you are thinking that you will "learn basic mechanical work" you should be aware that you may also learn the constant lesson that "the most expensive car you can ever own is a "cheap" Mercedes."  These really ARE economical cars - but only if you do the necessary work yourself.  If you have to hire the work done, 'good by wallet'.

BUT, if you have the discipline to actually do the learning and the work, and if you have a garage to work in and a basic metric tool kit, such a car could be a wonderful ride, an enjoyable project on rainy weekends, and very economical over the long run.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Help picking out a diesel w123 or w124 for daily commuter

Thank you Brian -

I appreciate the welcome. That is exactly what I noticed when I began researching -- I happen on the mercedessource website, and he has quite a few how-to videos as well as a decent number of parts.

I definitely have become enamored with diesel vehicles for sure,  as well as the over-engineered and high-quality design of the late 80s-early 90s mechanical Mercedes diesels.

I am not in a hurry and have just started me search. My Element is still drivable right now, as the leak is not too bad. That is awesome on the 83 300d cars you have. It's funny -- I've never noticed them on the road before and now it seems I see one every day.

Caveat - there is nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes.

I've read that a lot. I'm trying to avoid some of the pitfall models -- early Aluminum block w124s, rusty w123s with vacuum and AC issues, all the wagons with their hydraulic rear suspensions. The 3.5l turbo 90s w124. I'm going to check that 91 2.5 out and see how it looks.

I've also read that it is better to get a car that has more (but reasonable) amount of miles vs. less -- something with 5k/yr avg. because those miles are likely short trips that end up causing more damage.

I look forward to learning a lot from this group!
-Dan
