[diesel_mercedes] Vacuum Hoses & Tubes

LOL ! you car looks like most do when the DPO screwed it all up then gave up and sold it to you....

You need to do some more cleaning with de greaser or soap and water , but never , _EVER_ use carby cleaner spray ! it will attack delicate and expen$ive pla$tic bits you'll be hard pressed to find....

All the things sticking out of the firewall are plastic tubes and each one is color coded , never will you fine a black one connected to a yellow one like I see on your car.

That thinner black plastic tube is a vent .

Does the tranny shift O.K. now ? .

Does the heater fan come on ? .

I can see the central locking is Kaputi , it's really not important until you have the rest of the car all 'Just So' then you can finish it and amaze people by unlocking all four doors , the trunk and fuel filler flap at once , _silently_ .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: 79 300D vacuum hoses

Good deal ! .

I'll go look at your pix in a moment .

I had '78 & '80 models plus I still have '82 240D auto , '84/85 300CD auto and a '84 Euro Spec. 300TD so I know your vacuum hose pain .

Look up " Mity Vac Tool " and either buy one cheaply @ Harbor freight or look in pawn shops as I buy lotsa tools used and this one can't be beat for Mercedes Up Fixin' .

Never , _EVER_ make the mistake of trimming and old hose that's easy to remove or has cracks at the end or is blubbery ! just pony up for at least 10' of vacuum hose from Kragen / Shucks / Pep Boys etc. in the correct size ~ it should slip on with a gentle push but require a twist to get it to slide off again else it _will_ leak vacuum and cause you trouble .

I know many here have posted detailed messages about vacuum testing & repairs , adjusting etc. , etc. plus many diagrams and photos in the home page's various files and photos sections .

Previous were 240s with manual trans and manual cc controls. I uploaded 2 pictures of the hoses that are plugged off in the photos section "79 Vacuum hoses disconnected/plugged".

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Steering Box Adjustment

No where near as big as the ones on my '59 Nash , '67 MGB GT or '69 Chevy C/10 =8-) .

My son _HATES_ big steering wheels and since he's a Diesel Mechanic , he has arms like Popeye and can easily rip steering wheels of with his bare hands....

Me , I'm getting old plus I've always liked big steering wheels .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: 79 300D vacuum hoses

Hi Nate,

This is very helpful. After I cleaned off some of the hoses I noticed that they are not all black (duh). This is my first diesel with an automatic and acc. Previous were 240s with manual trans and manual cc controls. I uploaded 2 pictures of the hoses that are plugged off in the photos section "79 Vacuum hoses disconnected/plugged".

You are right, there is no EGR on this car. It's been too cold to go outside the past week to do any work on it. Weatherman threatening warmer weather next week. Maybe I can get out there and make more sense of this then.

thanks,
David

Has linkage from the throttle going over the valve cover to the right side under the manifolds back to the trans on the right side. It shifts fine through the gears. The vacuum pump is sucking but it doesn't feel very strong. I'll get a reading on it tomorrow to see what it's pulling. The engine also shuts off right away so that part seems to be working fine.

The other side has another 1 to two hose valve with a green line and a red/white line. There are two yellow lines coming out of the firewall into a three way fitting that has the third part plugged.
