Diesel RVs: 01/31/08

[diesel_mercedes] Add On Fuel Boost Pump

you want a low pressure , high volume oump , under 5 PSI , 9 is WAY
too much pressure .

It's supposed to be in the back , near the tank for a couple reasons :

It's a _push_ pump not a lift pump so if it's close to the fuel tank
and below of level with the bottom of it , it'll be self priming and
quieter too .

There's an ingition powered feed in the trunk for the power antenna and
also a live feed for the auxilliary vacuum pump in the W-126 models .

You adjust the park brake at the shoes because that's where the wear
occurrs .

Drill the cap but be aware it'll pi$$ diesel out every left hand turn
you make...

If you need to drill it , use a tiny wire drill , as it doesn't need
much to vent .

NO ! he means swap the two fuel hoses where they come out of the
firewall ~ this way you'll be sucking in from the tank's unscreened
line , a very bad idea as the next time you get filthy fuel , BAM ,
you're dead .

Better to remove & clean the strainer , a nasty job I know but
Ma 'Benz wouldn't have added an in tank screen if it wasn't needed .

I don't believe that anyone here is sneaky enough to advertise

the pressure monitor system by using fear tactics.

I believe we are all a group of experienced individuals who are

interested in learning from each other. I don't want to learn something

the hard way if I have the chance to participate in the experience

of a fellow RVer who has been there already.

It is this kind of BS advertising, "loose 5 pounds of air just by checking

Hey Chuck and all,

I am another fan of the pressure monitor. I leave it on at all times.

That means that I get the alarm (especially in very cold winter nights)

at night as well and then I know I have to do something in the morning.

I am very happy with it and the most important thing is: the sensors

are pretty darn accurate (compared it with a digital pressure gauge)

For me my peace in mind is important that my rig's feet feel

well (but that's just me).. .and as I posted before: It already saved

my rig and possibly my life once. To replace the rig would have bee

about 500 times more expensive.

When I was a newbee, I would have jumped at the chance for such a tape. As
a thought, if I were doing it now, I would organize each little clip into
files and probably put it on a CD with an index. Kinda like a movie where
you can select several different starting points/segments. That way if you
were having water pump problems, as an example, you could see the segment on
the water pump. I can think of several different "chapters" that could be
created -- filter changes, water pump, batteries, leveling jacks, etc. With
the CD, one could put a lot of information in one place. As it is now, I
have downloaded all the manuals that I can find on everything in my MH,
trouble shooting guides, tips, etc and have loaded them on a CD. That way
it doesn't matter which computer I have on board for the trip, I have the
information in file format and order to be able to retrieve.

Hi Dave,
Better yet, a DVD as Video tape is becoming a thing of the past since one can buy a DVD player for less than $50.00 now. DVD's are a lot cheaper and takes up less space in the owners manuals. Then may be looking at the manufacturers view point, if I tell then how it works and it does not work that way, more warrenty claims. Just a thought. Chuck B

[Diesel-RVs] Battery Shutoff

You can find info on the battery disconnect you purchased on Ebay at
www.intellitec.com . The relay you bought carries a constant load of 100
amps and a momentary (30 seconds or less) load of 500 amps. They also have
a heavier model that is designed for wiring in at the battery location ---
it carries a load of 200 amps and a momentary load (30 seconds or less) of
1200 amps. They also describe their switches and monitoring devices. If
you go up there look under battery applications. They also have other items
that could be used in MHs such as bi-directional isolator relays (used to
charge two sets of batteries that are now charged with an alternator and
battery charger separately -- like what is found on a lot of MHs re the
chassis charging with the alternator and the house batteries with a battery
charger).

It is this kind of BS advertising, "loose 5 pounds of air just by checking air pressure
over several days" that turns me against (not just off) these products. FEAR tactics. How
long does it take to drain 5 pounds of air out of a car tire? More than "several days" of
just checking pressure.
I am not saying that the tire monitoring systems do not have merit, but keep the
advertising to real life. Makes me feel if you are B*ll Sh*t here, where else are you
doing the same?

Just a silly question, why would you want a momentary switch in either location? This is
the same as a Ford starter relay. Just a little heavier.

Due to all of the comments that I read about not knowing what was happening
with the toad and also just the "PITA" to check the tires of the MH is why I
bought the PressurePro System. It has already caught a slow leak on an
inner of the rear duals for me -- the valve stem was leaking at the wheel.
I depend on it.

Hi Chuck, I bought the PressurePro system for almost the same reason
except my blow out happened on my triple axle car trailer causing about
$1500.00 in damage because I was driving at night and can't see the trailer
tires in the dark. Anyone that drives a motorhome and esp. pulling something
behind it is just asking for trouble by not using some type of tire pressure
monitoring system. I won't leave home without it.

Hi Paul, thanks for the explanation. Yes a 5lb. loss from checking tire
pressure for only several days is probably not likely but if you check tire
pressure with a gauge you definitely lose at least some air. No way around
that and eventually you will have to replace that loss. I sure like checking
my tire pressure in about 15 secs. using the PressurePro system than
spending 15 minutes checking tire pressure with a gauge at each wheel.

Yes pump runs with key.used #12 or 14 fuse connect.Carter universal pump 9 psi #p74019 $43.99 advance auto parts. Mine was free,however purolator makes a cheaper pump.Yes everything under hood.They say to run pump beneath tank.However crawling and changing primary filters twice a week would get old.Running this setup since Sept.However if you have leaky injectors smoke will be worse with a pump.

My mom said brakes are for wimps. Her first car had no floorboards or
brakes and she stopped ala Fred Flintstone. But those were the good
old days as she said. Her dream was to geat a "beater" truck with a
log for a front bumper and just plow through traffic. She was not a
patient woman with that cigarette hanging from her mouth - God bless
her soul!

DNA and loving my mother aside, I think she may have fibbed a bit
along the way about walking 10 miles every day in the snow to
school :-)

A good RV course can help teach the difference behind "riding" the
brakes, and using them properly so they remain safe, last a long
time, and don't glaze. Oddly cheaper RV's have less daily maintenence
concerns than the air-brake equipped models. And it's not that one is
better than the other - it's all weight and engineering driven. There
are good and bad hydraulic systems, just as there are good and bad
air systems.

I've "heard" a lot of trucks leaving their exhaust brake on all the
time as of late. (This is not a Jake brake which is the louder engine
version.) The key is knowing your RV systems and caring for them
properly. There's nothing as comforting as an engine break on a down-
hill grade. If you listen to your RV, like you do your dog, your
transmission will be thanking you for that exhaust brake. Nothing
like sharing the work load :-)

It's really all very zen. It's like the question. If you aren't
there, does the forest tree that falls and crushes your RV make a
noise?

We purchased a PressurePro system after we saw a couple of motor homes come through the park where we were staying within a period of 20 days. Both experienced a blow out on one of the rear tires on their toad. They never knew that the tires blew. Before they were alerted of the blow out from passers by, damage was done to the rear quarter panel and hub of the toad costing over a thousand dollars. Add to that the stress, cost, and disruption of travel plans. We then decided to invest in our PressurePro system. Early in the morning of the day I travel, I turn the system on and it will tell me the tire pressure of each tire it monitors without leaving the coach. Too late for the nay sayers to try to talk me out of purchasing the system. We are happy we got ours. Chuck B

Stanadyne fuel water seperator,bought at Napa,uses wix#33166 filter.I have primary,to electric fuel boost pump,the Stanadyne,then to regular stock filter.I ran wvo for a while,but like the idea of a seperator for Biodiesel.The electric pump gives V8 performance up mountains.Mercedessource carrys same filter.Same price as Napa.
