Re: [diesel_mercedes] 1982 240D Engine & Trans Overhaul

Nate,

I have one that doesn't retract very well.

Thanks

With this engine it passed $15,000.00 and it still needs paint and the driver's seat spring replaced, I have to chase down a slow leak in the central locking, so forth and so on, on and on ad naseum .(I'm maybe going to add a tachometer just because I can, using all stock Mercedes parts) .

As I have said before : good thing I like this car .

I shoulda bought your 240D but this is SWMBO's car and it's the first one we ever bought and I actually rather like it a lot .

I took the 'B' pillars apart this morning @ 04:00 and began cleaning the seat belts and retractors, as they were hung up to dry I tried mightily to replace the door latch strikers but the damned screws won't budge so I dug out my reverse drills and drill motor to drill the heads off the screws then realized once I have the screws out I'll have no way to latch the doors until I find new ones......

Off I went to P-A-P, hand impact driver and BFH in a box, tried all three near cherry W126's there (same strikers and screws as W123), no joy .

My impact driver is forty years old and dates back to my Motocycle Mechanic dayze in the early 1970's the part you hit with a hammer is mushroomed and cracked, it occurred to me maybe it's worn out ? . about that time I *smacked* my good hand with the BFH and decided to call it a day, my hand stopped bleeding, maybe Tom will give me a hand (? get it ? ) to - morrow at the P-A-P in Sun Valley ~ on the way home as I was nursing my now sore and  bleeding other hand I stopped to have tacos and buy a new impact tool and a new 5MM bit too just to be safe....

Driving to and from the P-A-P I took it on the freeway, varying my speed all over the map, I let it run a short while and it went 73 MPH, used to go 83MPH wide open but this new engine is tight so I want to break it in fairly gently .

I now have the driver's side seat belt re installed, and it zips back as soon as you release it yet isn't too tight and doesn't lock if you pull it out too quickly .

I love it, I'm sure SWMBO will too .

I cleaned up the 'B' pillar covers and lower plastic shields, will prolly install them to - morrow at the Cars & Coffee .

Got home and after a nap began tp polish out the black rubber marks from the lady who hit it at the Pizza parlor last Summer ~ I need to find an honest and _competent_ paint shop and get it re painted .

I'm tired, time for bath & bed (or maybe recliner) .

_Finally .

Victor has had my car since 12.14.2016 ~ over a year but it's done .

@ 362,291 miles it now has a fully rebuilt engine, transmission and injection pump plus injectors, a new SANDEN 7 series AC compressor and a modern condenser .

They commented "I don't know how you drove it 3,000 miles to Colorado, New Mexico and back with the engine like that" .

Simple : it's a well designed and built German automobile and I never, _ever_ overspeed nor thrash it plus of course I always HOT CHANGE the oil and filter on time .

I have to go back and pick up a lots of old parts, the original DELCO R4 AC compressor (still works great !), the undamaged original AC condenser I replaced with a larger and more efficient cross flow typ one, the 'rebuilt' starter that turned out to have a bad Bendix Grrr), the oil pump who's shaft some how got _bent_, all the timing chain shoes and tensioner plus a timing chain, I hope I can get good pictures of the shoes, they were so worn out it's amazing nothing broke, worn out pistons, all four, they had to bore the block to maybe second over size, , valves, seats and guides ~ the list takes up two pages, all the bands in the transmission including the reverse one, two new Guibos for the driveshaft .

They set the up shifts slightly higher RPM than stock and asked me to try it, if I like it, good, if not they'll re adjust to stock when I bring it back in 1,000 miles for the initial oil change, valve adjustment and so on  .

The higher up shift RPM's already bother me, I don't like the engine to wind up this tight unless I choose to delay the shifts manually like on steep hills or when engine braking down steep grades . I know it'll eat into the fuel economy too .

The car is worth maybe $1,500, right ? the bill came to 9,872..78 *:-O surprise good thing I like this car best of all of them .

Looks like I'll finally have to bite the bullet and have it re painted ere long .

I've been setting money aside for this job for a long time now (years) so I hope I can afford it ~
