Re: [diesel_mercedes] MB tool kit

Yes, Nate and I each have multiple versions of the cloth toolkits.  The one that I am asking about is for the 140 series, S-Klasse cars.  It's a round, hard plastic case, designed to fit into the spare tire rim.

Today, we found a 'new' blower motor in an '82 SEL, in the p-a-part yard on Peck Rd.  Nate then plugged it into my car in place of the original.  The original was still turning freely, but the motor brushes are worn down to invisibility, and the fan wasn't blowing.  As soon as Nate put in the new one, we had air flow again.

[diesel_mercedes] Junkyard & Fan Fun

The HVAC Fan in Tom's W-126 stopped recently , as it's been bugger all hot here we decided to address it to - day , went to our favorite P-A-P and began taking apart W-126 dashboards .

It turns out Mercedes knew this would be a high service item and so until 1982 , it was super simple to remove and replace , I bet if I was in The Dealer , I could swap them out in 30 minutes or less .

What I did was to practice the job by taking several apart including one 1991 W-126 in hopes it's fan motor would have less wear , it turns out tht although the fan proper remains the same , the electrical connections are different in the W-126's with all black fan speed buttons .

I was able to find one that worked well and installed it a few blocks away under some shady trees , it blows nicely again and more air volume too as I cleaned old dried leaves out of both the plenum and the squirrel cage .

I don't know how long I spent swapping the fan out , Tom will , as always I spent extra time cleaning things and trying to fix it " Just So " .

We'll soon find some brushes and I'll replace them as post about it here , it looks to be another simple job .

One of the W-126's we found was a nice Grey Market 6 cylinder gasser , it had a Becker Europa Electronic radio we grabbed , a nice until and well worth the $17.00 price if it works , they usually do .

I also found a super clean and shiny 1978 W-123 300D that Tom noticed still held vacuum in the central locking . in the junkyard no less ! .

As it was a wretched Klima-I HVAC equipped car , I bet they simply gave up fighting for cool air and drove it to the junkyard , it was that clean and had shiny paint etc.

I was able to find some nearly new taillight lenses for $20 each , shortly they'll be in my beloved Turbo Diesel Sports Coupe .

I'm really tired and am prolly forgetting some details of the works but we had fun and the car is  better now .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Dammit

Not quite a decade ago, I was quoted ~$900 for a set of 5 new pistons.  Fortunately, I didn't need them.  I did have a long conversation with a shop in Belmont, CA, (up on the SF peninsula), about re-sleeving the engine, they'd done several.  Said that you can usually re-use the stock pistons, which I regarded with a bit of suspicion.. Never needed to get the work done, still have a full set of sleeves, though.

Well ;

We sleeved the cylinder block , they're not wet liners so it's a bit complicated .

He hunted around his massive stock and found a nice set of good used std. pistons , they sure are expen$ive ! .

Yes , it will *if* it's a ring/piston/cylinder fault .

Not so much the vlves unless one is burnt and I doubt that as it runs very smoothly and evenly .

Wow ~

Binz are _really_ rare , that one is still is saveable condition but won't be for long .

I sweat just looking at it , I used to lust after a Binz Ambulance....

Shoulda bought it I guess . only $1,500 running and registered , I can't see $10K for this lump no matter how rare it is ~ I can buy a 230SL and drive it home in better shape for $8K .

I"ll share details when it's done, but ALL the info from this board since I joined in Oct has been keeping me sane and informed enough :)

I had to drive 1hr to/from ABQ Airport a few weeks back. I couldn't drive above 50mph without a lot of shaking because I need an alignment *that bad* (at the very least). After 5 days of sitting in the airport pkg lot, Betty started RIGHT UP (good girl), but on the way home I noticed the charging light flickering on and off.

Then I went through a move...all the craziness of packing and moving...and not quite paying attention to the little things, and in hindsight, starting was becoming a little sluggish. The day after big moving day, SWMBO (her car had been gently totaled, which was a blessing for us but that's another long OT story but we were sharing Betty) was out doing errands and the car just wouldn't start. Battery was deadzo.

I got it to my guy Thom at European Autowerks and we looked down at the VR and saw it sort of limply hanging out. He ended up filing down the oddly worn brushes, and he said the existing screws (apparently still attached to the dangler) just spun in the hole so he replaced that one, and charged up the battery and all seemed fine.

Until about a week later. No charging light flicker at all, but starting seemed to get more sluggish over time until one day it didn't start at all. I pulled the battery and had them do a free overnight charge at a FLAP and it tested ok. I put it back in and drove back to get the alternator tested and it wasn't high enough voltage.

So I ordered myself a "brandy new" Bosch voltage regulator from AutohausAZ at $28 and change (got myself a replacement oil pan drain plug and washer while there). When I finally crawled under to replace the VR (yep, should have done that maybe before ordering?) the screw that Thom had put in was still there, but the OTHER one (which i think was a non-standard, and probably not well fitting, bolt) was totally gone. And that hole had some metal wrapped around it, looking like some sort of grounding thingy.

Yeah, I'm going to have to get that or a stubby, even my ratcheting stubby won't fit on the inner most screw. Thanks for the shopping tip, didn't realize those could be had so cheap.
