[diesel_mercedes] Re : Neutral safety switch and shifter jamming.

Usually the failure of the starter to crank , it the solenoid dying of old age , the jamming shifter is a new one to me .

Remember : you can always go rescue her when it refuses to crank , just take a shiny new big paper clip and jumper the starter teminals in the black plastic box either on top of the right inner wheel housing or on the right frame rail near the alternator , depending on what chassis & year you have .

Just had a case of not starting and then pushing the car into a parking space and then it started. It's my wife's car and I experienced the not starting once and it was solved by jiggling the shifter. Lawrence Rhodes

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Fuel Tank Question;;; Astounding

The only accurate way to check you miles per gallon is to start with a full tank, run a certain distance, refill the tank, and divide the miles traveled by the gallons consummed. If you start with 3/4 of a tank, and end with 1/4, an innaccurate fuel guage can change the numbers drastically. My GMC duramax can go 68 miles before the guage moves off of the full mark. The tank holds 4 gallons past full. Can never use the guage to get accurate calculations but it is usefull for estimates.

I used only 1/8 of a tank on that trip. Then I went back up there, back to Idabel, then back up to his place , and returned home, 6 mile out of Haworth, Okla. A trip a bit over 200 miles. When I left it had a hair under 1/2 a tank, when I got back home, the neede was a hair above 1/4 tank.

Now I an astounded. Let me explain. I have a brother that live 50 miles north of me, in the hill, a bit over a one hundred mile round trip. We have had this car a bit over 3 years, but I only rarely drive it, as it is mostly driven by my wife. Recently I drove it up there. When I left it had 3/4 of a tank of fuel. With a 21.1 gallon tank that would be near 36 mpg . if the mpg was 28 mpg, it would be approximately a 28 gallon tank, is that possible ?

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Fuel Tank Question;;; Astounding

Bill, I do a 840 mile round trip, sometimes twice a month.  My 85 wagon is loaded down with tools and building materials.  I set the cruse control on 75 and I get 27MPG.  One time I lost the rear end and it was replaced by a mechanic that I did not know.  Don't you know, he was sold a rearend for a 240 rear and put it into my 300TD.  Drove home at 75 miles per hour and everyone was passing me.  Maybe the rear end was replaced.  If it has and you get 35MPG, I would like to put one in my cars!
