Subject: [diesel_mercedes] 300D 5 speed

I have a recent purchase 84 300D automatic. My neighbor has a 84 190D 5 speed. Does anyone know if the 5 speed manual will bolt to the 300D? I know with dodge most bell housings will fit various engines i.e. gas bell housings fit most gas and cummins bell housings fit most most years cummins. These 2 mercedes being of the same year I should think they would mate up with no problem. Anyone know the answer? I also wonder what fuel mileage Increase would be like. Maybe 4, 5 mpg?

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Alternator

Be that as it may, even after you've done several alternator swaps, its a PITA.  A lift really helps.  The good news is that 99% of the time its only the brushes and you can swap those out without removing the alternator.  Try to stick to Bosch if possible.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Thumping noise

I remember the first time it happened to me. I was out of Barstow heading up the 7% grade toward Las Vegas, and I could not believe my ears. Did not have a clue, put it in the air and saw nothing. Limped into Vegas and limped back to L.A. with intermittent clanging for the next 2 or 3 months trying to figure out what was up. Ran across a video showing the axle bearing going bad, problem solved. The video said that you can turn your axle around or switch left and right and get another 100,000 miles if you have the courage.
